OMH here it is not even Purim yet, and you haven’t even helped Mommy and Tatty clean for Pesach yet, and you’re worried about packing for sem which isn’t even until when – September?

Track down the 2017 Seminary Spreadsheet (or whatever the equivalent is this year). It has a lot of helpful information.

And actually, shopping for some stuff now might be a good idea- you can get wintry clothing on sale as the season’s ending. But most stuff you can wait for (I started packing a week before, with most of my volume packing being the day of, though I did have some weird circumstances).

Apparently the deodorant there isn’t the same. Bring your own. And like Zehavasdad said: MONEY.

Shuli, I agree about bringing deodorant, but they do sell regular American brands over here, so you don’t have to bring a whole year’s supply. With luggage limitations, that’s a whole lot of space just for deodorant.

As far as bringing money goes, you should have your parents set up a bank account with a bank that does not charge for withdrawing from ATM machines in foreign currencies – yes, there are still banks with good fee rates. There may need to be a minimum balance in the account to obtain this (no) fee rate, but it’s worth it. When you need money, your parents would deposit a certain amount in the account that they will tell you and you can withdraw the proper amount in shekels over here. You can find out the Bank of Israel exchange rate for the day before and do the multiplication (take a little bit less). It’s definitely better than getting dollars and paying money changers their fees since they will undoubtedly be higher than the rate you will get from the ATM machine. Also, there is less danger of theft with a card than with cash. Once the cash is gone, you can say goodbye. But a card can be cancelled immediately once you realize it has gone missing and a new one ordered to come to you in EY (student name should be on account with parent).

How do Israelis manage to get through a day without American deoderant without smelling?

The American brands of most things in Israel are more expensive than they would be buying them in the US. Joseph, like one of my friends used to say “For Israelis, deodorant is a luxury”.

If Israelis mostly don’t use deodorant, and consider it a luxury, then deodorant isn’t an essential product to be used and needn’t be recommended as an important item to bring.

    #1139835

Americans do consider it a necessity.

How can it be a “necessity” for one set of countrymen (or women) but not another? Either it is a necessity as a matter of personal hygiene or it isn’t.

    #1139837

    Is running water a necessity?

At one time there were water carriers delivering water. In their absence, a method of delivering water is a necessity.

    #1139839

    There were also outhouses.

And outhouses no longer exist so bathrooms are a necessity. If enough outhouses are built for everyone, you can manage without bathrooms.

    #1139841

No, thanks. I’ll leave that for you.

tip #1: watch what u eat! peamericans dont realize that there are different standards of hechsherim. when we see hebrew letters we automatically assume kosher. however, the hechsherim are pretty tricky. try to stick with aidus hachareidus, rubin and landau.

    #1139849

I would post it but it has things on there that would not be appropriate to post on a public forum.

Maybe i can email it to a mod and they’ll send it to you?

    Inappropriate hints are inappropriate.

okay but how innapropriate can a seminary packing list be? there is a way to use hints that arent quite inappropriate by making more generalized statements
