Some of our personal property was severely damaged in the storm on Shabbos. The landlord (whose shul we pay rent to) is dragging his feet about contacting his insurance company. We found out through some public records searches that although rent checks for the property are paid to his shul, the property is in his name. We have the feeling this is why he “can’t get ahold” of his insurance company.
This also puts us in the terrible position of jeopardizing our own parnassa if it becomes known in the field that we are knowingly taking part in this “arrangement”. Our next rent payment is due tomorrow. We CANNOT be a part of this. The best thing I can think of is to write the next rent check in his name and see what he says. At this point we just want to be compensated for the damage to our personal property, and to get out ASAP.
Advice?

November 1, 2011 1:32 am at 1:32 am #822976gezuntheitMemberWhy would your landlord – or his insurance company – be responsible for damage to your personal property? Did he agree to this in advance?
Typically you need your own Renters Insurance for coverage.

November 1, 2011 2:59 am at 2:59 am #8229792scentsParticipantWhy not confront him with the info you have obtained. Ask him the name of the broker or insurance company. Don’t assume things, for all you know he might have missed the last payment.

Dude: You’ve been paying rent to your landlord’s shul for years, and now you think maybe it’s a scam?
You’ve been knowingly part of this for years.

2) We thought the property was in the shul’s name. Get it now?
3) It has not been “years”.

November 1, 2011 1:42 pm at 1:42 pm #822983A Heimishe MomParticipantA) Its about time you wizened up to his scheme
B) Personal property may very well NOT be covered by his policy which is probably minimally insured in the first place. Personal property – computers, furniture, clothes etc. in a rental need to be covered by YOUR renter’s insurance. His insurance would cover structural damage only. And since he hasn’t been legally collecting rent, the apartment is legally vacant, hence there should be no personal belongings for the insurance to even consider covering.
You’re out of luck on this one!!

November 1, 2011 6:35 pm at 6:35 pm #822986gaslightMemberLOL! That’s your choice. But if we were in on this, we would have been itemizing our nice hefty “donations” on our income taxes. THAT would have been a nice windfall for us!
Our side of the street is clean. But when “shtick” like this goes public (because it’s illegal), the rest of us cringe because it makes all Jews look like crooks. Dina d’malchusa dina is too much to expect of us? Esp. frum Jews??
