My close friend blurts out words that are totally not “her” when she gets pushed too far.

She never, ever uses these words in regular conversation.

In fact, she speaks in a refined way…until pushed past the limit.

She is forever putting money in the pushka (when she slips) and really hates how she feels afterwards.

I personally NEVER heard her say anything “unprintable”,but her kids have. This pains her to no end.

What are some practical suggestions of “ok” words to use instead?

    eclipse,

I found that, when I became religious and wanted to train myself to not say certain words when shaken (e.g., jar dropped on foot, near accident on the road, etc.), it was not enough to resolve to refrain from saying the words. I had to resolve to not even THINK them when remaining quiet, since, when caught off guard, the word that first comes to mind slips right out of the mouth before I can stop it. One thing that helped me is that I picked a different, non-offensive phrase (e.g., “oh gosh!”, “yikes!”, “OUCH”), and consciously used it in similar but less sudden/stressful situations. Soon that became the word that I thought, and it became the word that popped out of my mouth.

    Hope that helps!

I’m not sure if this helps but there’s a group called Bleep I think – run by a frum girl who encourages people not to use offensive language.

    Have her try this:

    #&%$@!*&%

It really packs a wallop, when said with the right tone of voice. And everyone knows you mean business

No, this was intentional. Check the poppa=Mod80 and GS4 thread for the full story.

Gosh, I had no idea I was this policed!

My solution is not to say anything. If you use an innoffensive equivalent, it just makes the original more likely to slip out. Instead when I do somethng like hit my thumb with a hammer, I picture my reaction if the same thing had happened in a three stooges sketch. I would most likely laugh, so I do.
