Like several people mentioned, there is chewing gum and there’s doing jaw exercise. I don’t like the way it looks but someone chewing gum, mouth closed, is not so bad. The other just makes someone look… not very good.

    AYC- agreed. http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/the-kiddush-hashem-thread

It probably starts at a young age and develops into a bad habit. It really looks disgusting but the chewers don’t realize what they look like or think its normal because others are doing it too.

I find it very unclassy the way some people chew their gum, to put it mildly! As far as Tznius is concerned , anything that makes people look can be questionable.

I think it depends on how u chew your gum!!! You don’t have to make it obvious that you are chewing on a piece of gum!!

hmmmm… I can’t imagine boys chewing gum!!Girls have to adhere to the laws of Tznius!!! Woman must be eidal and refined, chewing gum openly in the street is not tzniusdig at all!! In the case of a boy, i would imagine them chewing on a piece of paper, or a toothpick rather then gum!

    #800901

    ill explain it

Are they chewing gum, or their cud?

I walk the same Ave J, Ave M, 13th Ave, 16th Ave like many posters here. How is it that I don’t notice these things and everyone else does?

The punctuation in this title leads had me a little confused at first.

“Teenage girls and older chewing gum on the street” . I was confused what someone might mean by older chewing gum on the street, especially as it related to teenaged girls.

i think any1 chewing gum on the street is boorish.as an aside my mother once tried to redd a shidduch- after giving glowing info on a special girl the mother had one question,”does she chew gum?”

my mother, utterly astounded, answered,” I dont know if she chew gum. But i do.”

there are people out there who will look for things to pick on.

why cant people be happy and busy with themselves instead of looking at what others do under a microscope.

Given a choice, I’d rather share the sidewalk with a female who chewed gum than a male who smoked.

I think its just nervousness, OFD girls go in the streets and want to meet boys, if and when the girls meet someone, they have a ‘stress ball’ in there mouth.

actually the gemara also says ha’ochel bashuk domeh lakelev. i would also like to point out that the fact that it grabs mens attentions is the litmus test. someone posted b4 that we shouldnt be looking – fakert! ( i dont mean we should be looking lol) if its grabbing attention we’re not trying to look- it’s in our faces- which is a general guideline for whats not tznius.

I remember hearing from Rav Y. Galinsky either directly or s/o told me, he said chewing gum is not the thing to do because you look like a cow.

untzniusdik, not really, but not befitting beni melachim either. As is the quaint, discusting EY habit to walk in the street or sit at a bus stop eating garinin and spewing shells everywhere.

Generally speaking, unless there’s a medical necessity for chewing gum (e.g. dry mouth),

anyone chewing gum loudly, in public, with his/her mouth open, and with a “crackling” noise and/or “popping bubbles,” looks extremely disgusting and like he/she is “chewing the cud like a cow” and shouldn’t do it.

many chew gum to aid in dieeting.

for the record, i have been to the krm supermarket and seen women in shaitels (50 plus years old) chewing gum. it didnt make me think they were not tzniusdik.

one actually crackeled the gum and that annoys my husband tremendoussly.

we once went to a concert and a woman two rows behind us kept crackling her gum. i finally turned around and asked her not to crackle as we came to hear the concert by the musicians not the crackling of her chewing gum…she did stop!

chewing gum in the streets is fine. dont make it in to a big deal if its not. eating in the streets is a different story.

ginger311 – Thanks for your opinion, but a Godol holds differently than you. I hope you don’t mind if he argues with you.

it’s not really okay to do it but if you wanna you shouldn’t chew really loudly so the whole neighborhood can hear you. you should chew softly and maybe take 1 piece of gum not the whole box. hope this helps!

Chewing on the box will almost certainly cause heads to turn.

ginger311 – It’s in my post above. It’s a good idea to read the posts on the topic before you add your two cents.

You seem to be at that teenage girl age, were you think you know everything.
