Toronto, Toronno, Chorono? How do the native or resident Canadians in the CR pronounce it? I think we at least all agree they are Torontonians!

    So far we’ve got Toronto:0, Toronno:1, Chorono:0

It ought to be pronounced Toronto. It normally gets pronunced Toraunto. I prefer Toronto.

As a side point, it is spelled in Otiot (invitations) as Tet,Aleph,Resh,Aleph,Nun,Tet,Aleph.

I prefer vav substituted for aleph as above.

Second “t” is usually dropped. No one Pronounces the first “T” as “ch”.

chorono as the t in train is usually pronounced chrain (no, not khrain!)

yichus- not true- i’m native, as you know, and real torontonians will occasionally say it with a ch. my father does it consistently, and i catch myself doing it too. personally, i say torono.

R.T.- spelling with an aleph is yiddish and in english would be pronounced tuhruhnto. with a vav is ivrit.

OK, Toi, I concede, but the only time I can think of saying it with a “ch” is if I had something in my mouth at the time. In any case, considering where the frum population of the city is slowly moving, More people will be talking about living in or going to Thornhill than in Toronto anyways. Most recent stats show Thornhill (Vaughan), Thornhill (Markham) and Richmond Hill have between 50,000 and 60,000 Jews. That’s out of a Greater Toronto Area of about 195,000. And many, especially in Thornhill (Vaughan), are, as you know, frum.

I have never heard of anyone saying “ch” variety.

Yichusdik — You are somewhat correct that there is (and has been) a trend to move north into Thornhill (both Vaughan and Markham) as well as Richmond Hill.

However, you should know that there is also a trend for younger couples to move south (St. Clair/Bathurst/Spadina area), a bit closer to the downtown core.

And I have noticed a continuous stream of people who have bought real estate in the Bathurst & Sheppard Avenue, resisting the temptation to migrate north of Steeles Avenue.

All of the above is based on observation (of the frum community).

    torono:1, toronto:1 (plus my sis-in-law) chorono:1 and a full mouth 🙂

RT- i’ve heard chorono from torontonians before.

There are more Canadians on this site. Come on people, input?

RT, I have seen this too, but it is a small proportion moving south (where property prices are very high) and in the Bathurst & Sheppard area, which is more affordable, there’s a lack of Jewish infrastructure that you would find both south and north of there. So unless that changes, the growth there will be limited too.

On the topic of the Toronto region, does anyone know anything about the Buffalo frum community (for example, in terms of friendliness, or how modern or yeshivish or chassidish it is?) Buffalo’s just two hours from Toronto, I think, maybe less. A friend of mine is considering relocating to Buffalo for a job.
