    I just today learned the origin of the minhag to say this, and to say it before Maariv.

    Makkos (Malkos)

    Makkos were given between Mincha and Maariv

    Psukim were read as the Makkos were given

    V’Hu Rachum was the last Passuk said

    Some Rishonim say we should have in mind, when saying this, that the Yissurim we had that day should be like Makkos for us and atone for our Aveirahs
