i thought chunky was adamah and creamy was shehakol.

brochos.com says its adamah for both.

this just came up a few minutes ago, i havent had time to investigate yet

Good question 80 that’s a tough nut to crack, since i almost always have it with bread its not an issue but it would be good to know.

Where is George Washington Carver when u need him?

If it is adamah (lets say chunky), and it is used in a sandwich, do you need to make both hamotzi AND adamah?

    #813659

peacemaker no you just make a Motzei, regardless of what the Brocho is on pb by itself

    #813660

i often eat it from the jar, with a spoon

well when the pb separates do you need to make a separate brocho on the oil? 😉

Ha’adama is correct. Even though it is pureed to the point that its source is unrecognizeable, since most peanuts are ground into peanut butter it retains its original beracha.

If not for this logic, chanky would also be Shehakol. it is not less finely ground, rather they add pieces after the processing. those pieces are a Tafel and would not affect the beracha

    What’s chanky?

Hello: I think you’re distinguishing between crunchy and chunky peanut butter (depending on the brand, probably). Chunky is not blended as well as creamy. Chunky is normal with peanut bits added in. And why are the bits Tafel? They must serve some necessary purpose otherwise you would have bought creamy. Unless you just want it for texture, I guess.

Peacemaker, peanut butter is protein, so yes it is actually good for you as long as you eat it in moderation. So a spoon or two is a good thing, the whole jar….not so much.

    #813668

@Peacemaker Almond Butter is healthier than Peanut Butter. Almond Butter is a good source of protein and good to eat before a fast. AB will give koach to have ample strength to last the fast.

    Is PB healthy to eat?

It’s OK if you’re eating natural PB with no added sugar.

If you’re eating the regular brands it’s like eating junk.

    #813670

Hello99, Even if most peanuts are pureed, which is not clear, peanuts are also commonly eaten whole. By seichel, it seems to me that brachos.com is correct. Mod 80, who eats chunky pb with a spoon? Smooth is ok like that, but chunky…??

    #813671

i like almond butter but it is not significantly different than peanut butter in its nutritional makeup. it has a bit less carbohydrates but otherwise is nutritionally equivalent.

peanut butter as mentioned above has a lot of protein,

it also has a lot of fat (there are low fat varieties)

but the real problem with peanut butter is its high sugar content. ive never seen a low sugar variety.

Look for “Natural” on the label. Skippy makes this, and so do others. The ingredients are just peanuts (or almonds or whatever). No added sugar nor any sweeteners and no partially hydrogenated oils.

    #813673

the first 3 ingredients listed for skippy natural are:

    peanuts

    sugar

    palm oil

smuckers makes a “natural” peanut butter that is just peanuts and salt, but i dont know if it has a heksher

    thank you for the information.

I think Smuckers has an OU. (I’m not 100% sure though.)

Yes, meant Smuckers natural- peanuts w/o sugar & oils.

(Used to buy this, definitely had a good hechsher. Just be aware that the natural peanut oil separates to the top of the jar.)

While these pieces certainly serve some function, presumably an enhanced texture in some opinions, their purpose is clearly secondary to the creamy base. Hence, we would apply the rule of making a Beracha solely on the Ikar and not the Tafel.

In a pinch, it could be ordered from Amazon, although it’s much more expensive. I used to get it in Shoprite (along with the almond butter), don’t know if you have one nearby.

Btw, some prefer to stir and then refrigerate because of the oil separation.

    #813679

    i got it

my arms aches from 5 min of stirring

    refrigerated

    tastes good

You are so right, and it’s marketed as kids’ food! Not many would want to feed their kids (or themselves) this stuff if they read the ingredients.

And this goes for other products as well- ice cream comes to mind…

Even if there is sugar in the peanut butter, the main ingredient is peanuts. It is still protein and it is still good for you and better than other snacks. So even if you are NOT getting the natural peanut butter, which btw is very difficult to use because the oil separates from it and it is difficult to stir back in, most nutritionists and doctors will tell you to use it anyway. It is NOT junk.

According to Rabbi Yisroel Pinchos Bodner in his sefer, “Brochos”, the brocha on eating peanut butter is a Shehakol. {Page 410)

Partially hydrogenated oils are VERY unhealthy.

There are natural pb’s such as Skippy, which uses sugar but no hydrogenated oils, and would be a healthier option and has no separation.

Btw, if you ever decide to go with the truly natural variety, you can use the peanut oil on top in a cookie batter (yum) and keep the rest for your spread, if that makes you more comfy.

Coffee you might say is batel b’rov in the water. Orange juice and the like might be a better question, though it is more common to eat a whole orange than a whole coffee or cocoa bean.

Rov oranges in America 20 years ago were used for orange juice. The Chazon Ish also thinks that all drinks from citrus fruits should be Ha’eitz. And there is no reason on earth that real chocolate should not be Ha’eitz. However, apparently not all chocolate actually comes from cocoa beans. Synthetic chocolate will be Shehakol. Coffee is also interesting.

yitayningwut: Rav Krausse from England proposed that chocolate should be HaEtz and asked many Gedolim. Numerous Teshuvos were written to justify the common custom to recite Shehakol. Some of the answers, such as cocoa being a minority ingredient of most chocolate, are irrelevant to peanut butter. Many of the replies appear forced.

I personally attempt to be machmir on myself to always make Shakol and HaEtz on other items before eating chocolate, but the consensus of all the Gedolim was that the primary Halacha is Shehakol, even though I’m not satisfied with any of the reasons.

The real reason seems to be, that the Shaarei Teshuva records the Beracha in chocolate as Shehakol. However, he was referring to a drink, not a bar or other solid. Drinks are intrinsically different, as Tosafos and the Rosh explain in the context of why we do not say Mezonos on beer. This is the answer also to orange juice. A liquid does not retain the original beracha, even when most are squeezed.

pba: instant coffee is flavored water. Brewed coffee is Mei Shlakos, which would be HaEtz if it met all the conditions. However, it does not.

    hello99-

I do make a ha’etz on chocolate, and on orange juice as well. Tosafos about the beer (I assume you’re talking about the bishul akum Tosafos in AZ) is not a raya because as you write about coffee, it is just flavored water. A chocolate drink, such as hot cocoa, would be the same. The truth is you seem to know the sugya a lot better than me, but I know my rav has a lengthy teshuva about it and I will try to look it over and post his key points. L’halacha however, this is what he holds.

    #813697

yitayningwut: no, I meant Tosafos Berachos 38a s.v. Hai. Beer is different than flavored water because the barley malt is cooked in the water and should be Mei Shlakos.

The chocolate drink the Shaarei Teshuva refers to is not hotcocoao, it is a syrup pressed from the bean. until Hershey developed the process for solidifying chocolate into a bar, this was the way the Aztecs and later the Europeans consumed cocoa forhundredss of years.

I would like to see Rav Abady’s Teshuva on the subject, is there a way you can post the text.
