We hear constantly in the media, the word hero being thrown around so loosely, some calling baseball players heros, others link the title to pop singers, etc.
What is the definition of hero? Who do you think rightfully deserves the title “hero”? Who does NOT deserve this title? Why do people mix them up?
Are there any heros here in the CR, or someone you know that you would consider him/her a hero/heroine?

Someone with gumption.
In simple words, its someone going through a really tough test and passing with flying colors! the big stuff like a handicap/sickness which pple have to live with daily. but everyone has something. for someone keeping shmiras haloshon for 2 hrs, daily is a hero. for the pple that need to lose a little weight, just not grabbing the sweets or sugar is a big fight, and being a real hero. we are all heros when we work on ourselves.
Every single one of you is a hero in some way or another…

The chief male (nuuuu, why not female??) character in a book, play, or movie, who is typically identified with good qualities.
yeah, but you know what? If you can be the best mother, daughter, husband, friend, or eved hashem you can be, you are a hero. every time you hold back that nasty retort, you have done something heroic. What about that bit of lashon hara you held back from saying?
Heroism needn’t be something well publicized. every day, in your life do something HEROIC!

For those who might not remember, this young officer in the IDF, during the 2nd Lebanon War, 5 years ago, saved the lives of his soldiers who were close by, by jumping on a hezbollah grenade that had been thrown at them.
He did this ultimate act of mesiras nefesh while shouting “Shema Yisrael…” as attested to by those who witnessed it, and were saved by him.

I was going to say the same thing. TO me, the way Leiby Kletsky’s father coped with the tragedy. That is a true hero. In our day and age to see a human being with clearly, so much love for his children, still keep his emunah and bitachon, still stay within the fold when tragedy unfolds, that is a real hero.

For the same reason that a waiter is a male who serves food and an actor is a male who pretends to be someone he is not.

This thread could take a turn in any direction from naming parents to physicians to firemen and policemen, teachers, community leaders, as well as athletes who, for some reason do inspire many people to be better in their personal lives or enjoy themselves in playing sports.
But based on the previous post, I want to add that when I think I have hurdles to overcome, I have been thinking of the news headline regarding Rabbi Sholom Rubashkin, who has been treated terribly by the jail and court system, is not able to see his family or spend a normal Shabbos, and on and on to where I cannot imagine how horrible it is for him to be in a cell, and he publicly stated his situation is “Gam zu laTova”. I believe he passed an unbelievable test, and then some.
When Rav Shach ZT”L published his sefer Achiezer, someone told him the sefer would accompany him to Gan Eden. Rav Shach ZT”L demurred and went to a drawer, where he pulled out a noose someone sent him. His quest for emes made him take unpopular stances, where he was attacked with cries of “Achdus!” “Shalom!” “Baal machlokes!” etc. Someone went so far as to send him a noose as a threat. But he didn’t back down. This is a hero.
The shlepper at the heimishe beikery who gets up when only ganoovim are awake to make my danish. That is a hero.

She was a woman who lived in Warsaw, She saw what was happening to the jews and decided to try to smuggle out of the ghetto children (children especially baby girls were easier than others)
She kept their indentities in a jar in the hope of returning the children to the parents after the war.
She saved about 2000 children from the Warsaw ghetto.
About 1943 she was caught by the Nazis tortured and sentanced to be executed. Her executioner was bribed and she escaped. She hid for the rest of the war.
She had a limp for the rest of her life for when the Nazi tortured and broke her feet after she was caught.
All Israeli fighting soldiers are heroes.

You can wikipedia her, but there was a movie about her and she is in Yad Vashem as a righteous gentile.

A hero is anyone who inspires other people to make the world a better place. Whether that is done by doing a courageous action or “ordinary” actions.

There is no word for hero in Lashon haKodesh, and for good reason.
(a) is clearly not in accordance with Jewish belief.
(b) isn’t either, as we say each day in the Hallelukahs, “His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man (Psalms 147:10).”
(c) and (d) are the only ones which are even worth dealing with.
Consider (d). Why would a person have courage? Either because he is reckless, or because he believes in something. Recklessness is certainly not a virtue. So we’re left with believing in something. Does he believe in something true or false? Believing in a falsehood is certainly not a virtue. So we are left with believing in something which is a true value. Our definition of a true value is a Torah value. Ergo, a hero is someone who shows great courage in upholding a Torah value. A similar case can be made for (c).
There is a word in Lashon haKodesh which comes close in translation to hero. Gibor.
And as the Sages said (Avos 4:1), “Who is a gibor? One who supresses his own inclination.”

BaalHabooze- I really believe that every single person here is a hero in some way.
From the short time ive been on CR, I’ve seen people write about tzarus they are going through, yet they are still walking forward. I see people who write here for the sole reason of helping others, when the person they are helping can’t give back to them because they dont even know who they are. I’ve seen people here who share personal stories about themselves, and people who respond with care. It’s beautiful.
So, yes, I think each person is a hero. A hero is someone who doesn’t give up, and I think that every person on CR is like that some way or another. Heros that fall and get back up and keep walking, sharing experiences and lessons that help others. (Its just my opinion)
thanks for the inspiring female story of heroism. actually i realized later that they were defining exactly Hero and Heroine is technically female.
another story of heroism is Rachel (totally forgot her last name)from Switzerland during the Holocaust who also saved hundreds if not thousands. she was a hero, or should i say Heroine.

i am trying so hard to be positive and accepting that my 4 year old son now has a permanent ostomy bag that i continuously replace and reattach to a surgically created hole on his abdomen. i see nachas now and know that my 4 year old is my hero. when i change the bag, which can be painful, he puts out his hand and says, “i am holding Hashem’s hand so i could be brave”. also, his older brother is a hero for accepting that mommy might be so busy and spend so much energy and money on his brother but the big guy loves him and is so good to him…both my sons are Hashem’s hero’s and my hero’s!!!

A ??????? is not a ‘hero’, a ??????? is a braggard or someone who considers HIMSELF a ‘big shot’.
