Although Muslims may pray 5 times per day, I have done research and it seems that they only pray on average 10 minutes at a time. So why do people frequently say that Muslims pray more than us? Our thrice daily prayers probably add up to an hour to a hour-and-a-half (give or take).
March 1, 2012 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #857018WolfishMusingsParticipantPerhaps it’s the inconvenience factor.
We stop whatever it is we’re doing three times a day (and, for many of us, only twice, as we daven mincha and ma’ariv back to back) whereas they stop what they’re doing five times a day.
Personally, it’s all nonsense anyway. I like to think that HKBH is far more interested in the *quality* of our tefillos, rather than the quantity.

March 1, 2012 8:24 pm at 8:24 pm #857020YehudahTzviParticipantMuhammed bdavka made it five times to outdo the Jews. Jews pray three times a day and four on Shabbos, that’s why he made it five for Muslims. Yes, their prayers are very short, so time-wise, we pray much more then they do.
March 1, 2012 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #857021HaLeiViParticipantIf a Muslim comes at Borchu and leaves before Chazoras Hashas, does it only take 2 minutes?

March 1, 2012 8:52 pm at 8:52 pm #857023skiaddictMemberTrue, i recently discovered the same thing myself, and felt really relieved, having always thought that muslims pray much more, turns out they dont. If 5 ten minute(even less)prayers is what they call official prayers, we do that all the time, we daven unofficially throughout the whole day. I think the 5 time a day prayer was to out-prayer the yiden, thats why they did it, but they can never manage to out-prayer us yiden.
March 1, 2012 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #857024mamashtakahMemberThey are probably counting the number of times the Muslims pray, not the amount of time they spend praying.
March 1, 2012 9:25 pm at 9:25 pm #857025yitayningwutParticipantThey say it because they pray five times a day, dude.
March 1, 2012 9:51 pm at 9:51 pm #857026Ken ZaynMemberwhy do they say muslims pray more
This is a classic example of chinese whispers. What they probably said was why do muslims prey more!! Prey on innocent civilians. Prey on children. Prey on their fellow muslims. Yes, they certainly prey more than other religions.
March 1, 2012 10:31 pm at 10:31 pm #857027besalelParticipantit was not done to out-pray jews – it was actually done to imitate the jews. on yom kippur. on yom kippur we pray five times and bow with our knees to the ground and head down. they copied our holiest day and made it every day.

Very funny!
March 1, 2012 10:57 pm at 10:57 pm #857029uneeqParticipantI heard a myth that Muhammad wanted to copy the Jews, and the day he came around was Yom Kippur, so that’s how they ended up with so many prayers.
Fool.

Funny! But I think this only happens at the dolt minyan! Incidently, isnt chazoras hashas when you go over daf yomi?
muslims prey more
Lol. But unfortunately true!
March 2, 2012 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #857031tahiniMemberSpoke to my muslim colleagues about their prayers, all of them independently told me their daily prayers are influenced in origin by the example of Jews on Yom Kippur. Kind of strange to compare minutes or frequency of prayes between different religions, heartfelt tefilla is about input and belief.
March 2, 2012 4:46 pm at 4:46 pm #857032BTGuyParticipantHi Flatbush Dude.
I hope the people who say they pray more are not saying it is a positive. Because if people knew what they were praying for, the positive thought should be they should not pray at all.
March 2, 2012 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #857033Sam2ParticipantWho cares?

So I was right!!
I always thought it was untrue.
March 4, 2012 2:53 am at 2:53 am #857035soliekMemberum…who cares? lets say that muslims DO pray more, would you change your tefilla schedule to six times a day? or maybe 5 hours a day? no. we have a mesorah for how much we should daven a day…why should what the muslims do matter?
March 4, 2012 3:01 am at 3:01 am #857036LogicianParticipantYishmael is named after, and exists because of, the power of prayer. There are many sources in Chazal that this is their strength. It is def. relevant to us, and can certainly serve as motivation for chizuk in this area.
March 4, 2012 3:35 am at 3:35 am #857037oomisParticipantThey pray more often, not more.
