I recently graduated from Prospect, and it definitely sound like you should look into it. The principles and teachers are wonderful, and instill in you Yashrus from day one. They don’t spy on you-they ask you to sign a contract at the beginning of the year that you are going to follow their rules, and they’d rather you note on it which rules you will not be following before signing, so that you are no lying. Then they trust you. Students feel comfortable asking teachers about anything and not have to worry about being judged (and I mean anything), and the teachers will answer! This is uncommon for girls high schools-my friends used to ask me their questions their teachers wouldn’t answer or they were afraid to ask, and I would ask my teachers.

Hi Snowbunny, I almost went to Chedvas for shanah bet, but for personal reasons I had to stay in America in the end. Rabbi Kahane, who’s the principle, is AMAZING! Chedvas has all the best teachers from all the different seminaries. There’s a big break in the afternoon for people who do college or work. They will help you find a job if you want to make some money while your there.

Here are some of the answers to your questions:

    1) The hashkafah is totally different from Peninim. The only thing that Peninim and Chedvas share is the building, and also that the Meisels run both of them

2)I’m not positive, but I think the dresscode is similar to other seminaries, button down shirt and pleated skirt.

3&5) The tuition is around 14,000 for the whole yr, 7,000 for half. Rabbi Kahane is very understanding, and sometimes gives people the whole yr for the half yr price. This was the case for me, and when I told him I wasn’t coming, he offered to lower it even more, in case the reason was the money

4,6,7) I’m not really sure the answer to these questions, because I didn’t end up going, but I know Rabbi Kahane, and he’s really understanding of everyone’s need.

    Good Luck with your decision!

Megan, I’m not sure what your talking about. Seminar is NOT New Yorky at all. My year there were only 5 girls from Flatbush, and they were very out of towny. Seminar is always mostly out of town. Yes, they may have some more jappy girls, but it’s like that in EVERY seminary.

How old are these kids? Because after a certain age it is THEIR responsibility to get up on time, not yours. The best thing is to give them the alarm clock and place it far away from the bed so they have to get up to turn it off. It should be an alarm clock with an annoying tune, it doesn’t matter so much how loud it is. Then, explain that it you will no longer be waking them up every morning, and that it is their responsibility to get to school on time. If they miss the bus or their ride, they’ll have to figure out how to get to school themselves. After one day of missing the bus,(if you don’t cave in and drive them to school yourself) they’ll get up on time.

I know you didn’t want alarm clock ideas, but believe me this works.

Hi Nanny, I went to Seminar a few year ago, and it was amazing! The girls are more out of town than in town. Academically, it is hard to say, cuz I don’t know what you consider hard. But I was in the honors track and I definitely worked. The classes are amazing and even now, after a few years, I keep in touch with some of the staff.

Sorry, I don’t really know much about Ateres so I can’t really compare it for you.

loveparty: you have to translate but she helps if your stuck

nanny: usually Mrs. Flam does the NY interviews, sometimes with another previous seminar faculty member

Don’t worry so much about the reading. The main thing is to show who you really are. And don’t worry about not getting in because you messed up the meforash; there were girls my year who were accepted and can barely read, but the school gives them extra tutoring at night if they need it. They base it on who you are, not on how great a translator you are. Good luck!

Hi, I went to seminar a few years ago, and I loved it! I was interviewed by Mrs. Flam, but it depends where you live (the west is usually interviewed by Rabbi Meisels, and sometimes Mrs. Jaeger or Mrs. Goldstein will interview). I loved my interview with Mrs. Flam-it was my favorite of all of my interviews. We talked for a bit and then I read a miforash (it was a ramban or ohr hachaim, I don’t remember which); don’t worry, she helps you if your stuck. Then we discussed the miforash and talked some more. Mrs. Flam made me feel so comfortable!
