Seret-Vishnitz Dayan: No National Service

idffA preparedness training assembly was held in Haifa on Tuesday night, the eve of 14 Iyar 5773 under the auspices of the IDF Homefront Command. It was intended for avreichim in a national service program. Avreichim left evening kollel at 6:00pm to attend the event. Ladaat reports the response was not long in coming, the following morning.

Dayan of the Seret-Vishnitz community, Rav Dovid Shlomo Zoldon did not remain silent. After learning about the kenos and what was discussed he walked into the beis medrash, pounded on a table and condemned the bitul Torah. The rav told avreichim they should not go to national service but remain in beis medrash where they belong.

Ladaat adds that many attending the event felt the words of the IDF officers from the Homefront Command were ‘kefira’ as they spoke of the might of the IDF, clearly indicating they believe the entire matter of protecting the tzibur at large rests in their hands, without mention of HKBH.

  1. it doesn’t take long for them to show their true colors bring in the Orthodox and teach them how to become Kofrim are you doing it because need a national defense

  2. Does anyone know that in the late 1950’s, the first “garin dati” (religious unit) that was ready to join the army , was initiated by the Vishnitzer rebbe ,R’chaim meir zz’l ? he was the uncle of the present Sereter rebbe. What happened in the ensuing years to repudiate R’chaim meir zz’l?

  3. Would any Rov condemn a rich donor who is proud of his accomplishments? No! So why so quick to condemn officers proud of the idf’s accomplishments. Let the guys who want to do national service do it so they can enter the workforce and support their families with kavod.
When did Judaism become so fanatical? With all due respect these types of responses are going to just radicalize some and alienate the rest.

  4. This suggests that even many forms of military, quasi-military or alternative service that up to now were acceptable to the frum community, will no longer so now that the Lapid-Bennett plans to introduce mass conscription are being implemented.

Note that this yeshiva is not a “fanatic” one affiliated with Satmar, but one that until now had been willing to work with the government.

  5. Have religious commanders and religious IDF officers address the kollel avrechim about National Service and the speech will sound and be different.

  6. zionflag who said “Have religious commanders and religious IDF officers address the kollel avrechim about National Service and the speech will sound and be different.”

That will work if they abolish conscription and tried to recuruit soldiers the way most countries do. While the Jews in Eretz Yisrael have always been more fanatic than those elsewhere, most would still want to leave yeshiva and start working in their mid-20s. There would be many volunteers.

All they need is to have soldiers explain how in the army they had plenty of time to learn in the army, never had problems with Shabbos or kashruth, how the reports of widespread pritsus are an “urban myth”, how an officer who scheduled female singers as a way of harassing frum soldiers was dismissed, etc. Of course, they would be lying.
