THANKS CUOMO: Hasidic Jews Refused Entry at Newburgh, NY Bowling Alley

Special to YWN News:

The repercussions of NY Governor Cuomo’s verbal assault Wednesday on the Hasidic and other Orthodox Jewish communities are already beginning to appear.

A Newburg based bowling alley refused service to a number of Orthodox Jewish families on Wednesday afternoon. This was less than 24 hours after the governor’s controversial speech and draconian measures limiting synagogue services to ten people per synagogue in what he termed “red zones.”

Approximately twenty un-related and un-connected families tried to go bowling when rain forced them to change their Chol HaMoed plans. Slightly after 2:15PM near Newburgh, NY, it began to rain.

One family related their version of what had transpired:

“We had planned a hike for today, when we got to the jump off point of the hike it started to raining,” the father in one group reported.

They called a nearby bowling alley called Pat Tarsio Lanes at about 2:30 PM and were told that there were plenty of lanes open and that they should come down. They arrived between 3:00 and 3:15.

The bowling alley is located at 173 South Plank Road (Rt. 52) in Newburgh.

According to the family, when they arrived and staff members saw that they were orthodox Jews, they were refused lanes.

“There must have been twenty families. Every single person was wearing a mask, and we were socially distancing,” the father said.

Upon their arrival at Pat Tarsio Lanes, the family met some Hasidic families who warned them what would happen.

“They will tell you that lanes are not available because they have leagues at 5:00 PM.  We also called beforehand, and were told to come down and that there were plenty of lanes.

“If the facts of what is alleged are true, it would be very troubling if this bowling alley was discriminating against Orthodox Jews who merely wished to bowl.  This calls for an explanation by the owners as to why they were initially given permission to come and refused later on,” remarked Charles Miller, a New York City-based attorney.

Pat Tarsio Lanes has been open for over sixty years. Their website states: Originally constructed in 1959 by Pat Tarsio Sr., and Lou “Wrongfoot Louie” Campi, Campi-Tarsio Lanes quickly became a household name. Soon thereafter, Pat took sole ownership of the lanes, which was then re-named “Pat Tarsio Lanes.” Located on route 52 in Newburgh, NY, this local spot developed into a neighborhood favorite for serious bowlers and amateurs alike.

And now, over 50 years later, his sons Tony and Pat continue to operate Tarsio lanes, preserving the same core values it was built on and valuing their customers as friends.”

A phone call made to Pat Tarsio Lanes went unanswered.

  1. Nothing to do with cuomo. I’d feel the same way if a single ethnic minority were the ones having quadruple figure covid rates.

  2. > R

You mean like coloured people – Blacks – who have the highest rates above any other identifiable group? Yeah, i am sure the media would love you and them when you denied Blacks entry. And I am sure you would advertise your name as well.

  3. @R

First of all you’re a racist and a bigot (not sarcastic)…

And @YWN I called them up, and the guy who answered asked me who was at the bowling alley that refused them. Call them back today (within business hours) I think this was a particular employee, abd not a company policy.

  4. gotta be honest. I am ONE OF YOU, and i wouldnt rent out lanes to you right now. cuz no one is following the rules.and even if u follow them for the hour you are bowling, you most prob have or have been exposed to Covid recently, cuz at home you are not following the guidelines. and i got news for you . WE ARE ALL represented at that protest in boro park. That is who they see, and that is not what they want in their bowling alley, in their suburban neighborhoods, or in their places of business. and honestly until we get it together, they are 100percent correct. What happened to the “light onto the Nations” ? people wake up! If the Rabbanim would have come out and said Shuls must be limited to 10 ppl there would be no protests. This is a huge chilul Hashem of such magnitude, i doubt we are going to recover from this. Luckily I am not a New Yorker. Hopefully, mainstream America will never see those protests! Hashem Yishmor.

  5. I can’t blame the bowling alley for not letting them in. The last thing any business needs is to become know as a COVID hot spot. WEAR the MASK!!!!!

  6. Cuomo is to blame for “incitement” (which is usually not illegal under American law, at least in the Israeli meaning of the term).

The people can bring an action under state and federal civil rights laws.

  7. Since hakarat hatov requires one to thank those who are truly due the gratitude, I would advise a rephrasing of the article title to read: Thanks to all our Charedi brethren who disregarded the Corona guidelines and several warnings from Cuomo over the course of 3 months until all frum neighborhoods throughout NY and NJ became re-infested with the virus, and then had the audacity to attack Cuomo as anti-Semitic for trying to do his job and make sure that the entire NYS does not become re-infested – thus causing the entire population to become even more aware of the Charedi 2nd wave and more understanding of the definition of that old Jewish word – chutzpah.

  8. ATTENTION JEWISH LEADERS:

CUOMO and BLASIO have Focused Solely on one Racial Group for Targeted Harassment: JEWS. By doing so they have Fueled the ANTISEMITIC TROPE that JEWS ARE “DISEASED”.

They have not mentioned nor Targeted Any other Racial Group. They have not Publicly reported any data on the Very High 2X the Hospitalizations Rates among Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims in Hot Spots they Ignore: STARRETT CITY, CO-OP CITY, BED STY, CORONA, EAST NY, PELHAM BAY, JAMAICA, CONEY ISLAND, BRONX, ELMHURST. And Catholics on STATEN ISLAND, nor have they Targeted them for Testing, Fines, Closures as they have the Jewish Community. THAT IS RACIAL DISCRIMINATION.

The Jews of NY boxed themselves into BLASIO’s and CUOMO’s TRAP by being the ONLY Racial Group to Agree to be Coerced tested as a Group and tracked as a Group, as BLACKMAIL for opening their Schools and Shuls. By being Coerced into TESTING MORE, of course Test Positives will Increase, as PCR Tests have a High Test Positive rate. Link Below:

  9. Firstly, In NY, other ethnic minorities have higher rates than the orthodox Jews. Savage gave those details yesterday. Secondly, it is a violation of the first amendment of the constitution, and clearly a civil rights violation to refuse an ethnic or religious minority entrance. And of course to vicariously project guilt on a person based on a stereotype of Other “Such people” is also a clear civil rights violation.
A law suit should be immediately filed so as to prevent this type of thing from continuing. Before you know it tis will look like Nazi Germany.

  10. I do not feel sorry for them. The Boropark, Williamsburg, Lakewood and Monsey communities bought this upon themselves. They chose to ignore and riddicule those that want to take precautions they refused to abide by the rules. I travel a lot and see every area where people wear masks the only areas where the rule is flaunted are the chareidi areas. So quit complaining about anti semitism because communities like 5 Towns, Teaneck, Baltimore and the likes are not being singled out because they are Jewish

  11. RC – If you are “one of us” then you would know that even within these communities, the vast majority are wearing masks. Anyone who’s around BK, in the shuls, schools, groceries, will see that this is true. The refusal of these owners to allow the Jews in is UNDERSTANDABLE, considering the negative press, government attacks on frum communities since the start of the pandemic, especially recently, & the stupidity of a group of community members in thinking they can publicly flout the guidelines. However, it is not JUSTIFIED.

These individuals could be part of the hundreds of thousands of frum Jews who have followed the guidelines religiously, as members of communities who have done the same. I have been vocal about the fact I have witnessed the widespread use of masks in shuls all over BK, PPE and precautions taken in schools, and neighborhood supermarkets. The fact that these families initially chose outdoor activities shows that they were intent on being sensitive to the situation.

Your response, as well as the establishment mentioned in the article, is evidence that the biased and inflammatory attacks coming from Cuomo, DeBlasio and the media have reached libelous proportions. “The Jews” are now considered ‘spreaders of disease’, despite the STATE STATISTICS not showing a significant difference in a rise of cases per capita in our communities. Just today a non-Jew told me personally that we are “super spreaders”. This is turning into Nazi Germany pretty quickly and you are content with blaming those who are being wrongly accused.

  12. Number one question to all the haters (dont get me wrong I am not happy seeing people with out masks and not practicing social distance) black people have a super high rate as well very high (you know by them it’s ok to protest and loote because covid doesn’t effect them for some reason)why are they allowed entry…. I guess you guys are smart enough to answer the question. And there are a lot of places around America where people are either protesting or having religious gatherings with hundreds of people together but only we the Jewish people get targeted. Yes we as yidden need to work extra hard and do the right thing as quoted in the Torah we are a light to the Nations. It is what it is stop bearing your heads in the sand to both sides! We will always be targeted no matter what, if we’re doing the write thing and especially if we’re doing the wrong thing. Doesnt matter how many laws there are that protect religion (it don’t apply to yidden) simply put EASV SONA AT YAAKOV. Siding with the goyim never helped in the past and for sure not in the future. If it bothers us so much just let’s daven hard and ask Hashem for every one to comply by the rules and be zocha to Mashiach.

  13. Chareidi Amiti: I am a chasid. I have been abiding by the laws religiously. I would appreciate you not stereotyping a whole community based on your well known established prejudices. The protests in Boro Park included many bachurim who don’t look too Chassidish. Plus, the highest rates were in Far Rockaway; I don’t know of any Chassidim there.

  14. “Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims in Hot Spots they Ignore: STARRETT CITY, CO-OP CITY, BED STY, CORONA, EAST NY, PELHAM BAY, JAMAICA, CONEY ISLAND, BRONX, ELMHURST.”

Currently there are no hotpots in the Bronx. We wear masks and keep social distance here.

Oh and Pelham Bay is mostly white, even though the Bronx isn’t.

Why is Cuomo not locking down orthodox communities in Manhattan, the Bronx, or Westchester? Because we wear masks and keep social distance. It works. It matters.

  15. “High False Test Positive Covid PCR Test”

The PCR test has a zero false positive rate. If you test positive on the PCR test you have the virus. The only way that can’t be true is if the lab mixed up your sample with that of someone else.

  16. “Censoring info on the Crowded BLM Thousands of Protestors”

You cannot criticize BLM protesters while supporting the protests of the last two nights. But in any case, what we (surprisingly) learned from the BLM protests is that mass OUTDOOR gatherings don’t spread the virus much. Cases, hospitalizations, and deaths DROPPED in the weeks following those protests. So ironically this week’s charedi protests aren’t likely to be dangerous, but the overcrowded indoor minyans are.

I personally only go to outdoor minyans with masks and social distance.

  17. @decency is key . the proof is in the pudding. how many people do each of us know who RL died or almost died from Covid (too many) how many people do each of us know who has it right now, ? mild or severe? (too many) I dont think Montana or Wyoming or Maine are suffering quite as much in their respective areas. If one family alone had gone to the bowling alley , perhaps there would have been no issue. but once multiple families showed up , assumably originating from “hotspots” i can understand why they chose to not accept them. It s a terrible matzav we’ve gotten ourselves into. but in general our lifestyle is one of communal interaction, we also have this false impression that we are the “baal ha bus” here and not the “guest” we need to follow our daas torah to figure out how to get out of this mess, and not just schreying anti semitism every ten minutes.
