Former GOP House Speaker Boehner Says It’s Trump Party Now

Former House Speaker John Boehner says there is no Republican Party anymore — but there is the party of President Donald Trump.

Boehner was asked about the GOP Thursday at a policy conference in Michigan. He replied: “There is no Republican Party. There’s a Trump Party.”

He added, “The Republican Party is kind of taking a nap somewhere.”

The former speaker is friendly with the president — the two have played a lot of golf together — and counted Trump as a supporter. But Boehner says he didn’t expect Trump to become president.

The Ohio Republican comes from the establishment wing of the GOP. He abruptly retired from the House in 2015 amid resistance from a conservative flank of House Republicans who challenged his leadership as speaker.

  1. While the Republicans need Trump’s base (the “deplorables”) to win, they also need the support of the business community (which supports free trade and liberal importation of foreign labor). Unless the Democrats go with a radical socialist who thoroughly alienates both the “country club” and the “social conservatives” (a socialist economic agenda and an extreme secular social agenda), the Republicans will have a hard time winning with the support of the “Wall Street” faction, as well as the religious fanatics (who tend to be pro-immigration).

  2. It’s certainly not the party of Eisenhower any more, nor even the party of the older Bush. And it certainly isn’t doing the business community any good. Trusting the economy to a guy who’s been bankrupt four times may not be such a good idea after all.
