CLOSE CALL: Nevada Trooper Forced to Dodge Drunk Driver on Highway

The Nevada Highway Patrol has released video showing the moment a trooper was nearly hit by a suspected drunk driver.

Trooper Adam Whitmarsh, an eight-year veteran of the department, managed to get away without critical injuries, but his patrol car was severely damaged.

Trooper Whitmarsh was handing out a speeding ticket and almost didn’t see the car headed his way.

Seconds later, dash camera and body camera videos show the moment of impact that sends him flying.

Whitmarsh had to jump on the car of the driver he was ticketing, just in time to avoid being smashed by a drunk driver.

It happened just before 7 a.m. Saturday morning on U.S. 95 near Ann Road.

The suspected DUI driver has been identified as 23-year-old Benjamin Perri.

He’s facing DUI, failure to yield, reckless driving and possession of firearm while intoxicated charges.

“I was just thinking survival mode,” said Adam Whitmarsh. “I reacted so fast. I mean, it happened so fast.”

Whitmarsh and his body camera were sent flying after the crash.

His leg and back were injured by the impact. He is still recovering.

“I do have back spasms now. The doctor could actually feel the back spasms,” he explained.

His patrol car was also damaged in the crash.

For Whitmarsh, it’s a reminder of why he got into law enforcement.

When he was young, he lost his father to a drunk driver.

“When I was 2 years old,” said Whitmarsh.”Four-way stop, going on a fishing trip. Rural New York. Driver didn’t stop. Foggy morning. Went right through him.”

Now as a state trooper, Whitmarsh had to make a split-second decision to save his own life.

“I kind of hurt myself in the process of doing it. I’m here today, so that’s the most important part, I guess,” he said.
