Addressing a pro-Israel group on Monday night, Vice President Mike Pence forcefully reiterated a promise made by President Donald Trump to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“I promise you that the day will come when President Donald Trump moves the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,” Pence said. “It is not a question of if; it is only when.

The comments came during a keynote address at the Christians United for Israel summit in Washington.

During the event, Pence emphasized the United States’ commitment to Israel, saying “Under President Donald Trump, if the world knows nothing else, then the world will know this: America stands with Israel, now and always.”

The VP also reiterated Trump’s commitment to Israel’s safety and security being a priority in any peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

“While there will undoubtedly have to be compromises, let me assure all of you gathered here today, President Donald Trump will never compromise the safety and security of the Jewish state of Israel — not now, not ever,” he said to a round of applause.

“The President,” said Pence, “knows any peace requires an end to the incitement of hatred, an end to any support whatsoever of terrorism.”

“And above all else, a lasting peace requires true and complete Palestinian willingness to accept and recognize the Jewish state of Israel,” added Pence.

On June 1, President Trump signed a waiver to keep the embassy in Tel Aviv. Every president since 1995 has signed the waiver. On the campaign trail, Trump had vowed to move the embassy to Jerusalem on Day One of his administration, a move that would be considered at odds with the long-running US policy.
