MTA Kicking More Trash Cans At Subway Stations

Starting Sunday, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is removing more trash cans from subway station platforms. The agency is expanding a pilot program that is aimed at reducing the rodent population in the subway system.

The MTA says it has more trash than it can collect at subway stations.

Crews can’t pick them up fast enough and trash bags end up in storage rooms or even on station platforms – contributing to the rat problem.

  1. Uh… Hello? I grew up taking NYC subways to Jr/Senior High School and I seem to remember they put the cans there because it helped to cut down on the rats, which were enjoying eating all the trash people threw in the tracks. I don’t see removing the cans as removing the problem. Just making clean up more tedious.

  2. That’s not an answer. By removing the trash cans, people will throw their trash on the tracks – a bad idea. Keep the garbage cans, but retrofit the stations with “Platform Screen Doors” (see this in Wikipedia). But this is going to cost big $$ with retrofitting all subway platforms.
