Deri Seeks to Set the Record Straight with Chabad

Shas co-leader Aryeh Deri is aware that for many Chabadnikim, Shas is a non-starter in the upcoming election following his return, as he is viewed as being responsible for persuading Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita to support the Oslo Agreement of 1995, which resulted in the agreement being approved in Knesset.

Known for his centrist/left-wing views Deri is not favored among Lubavitcher chassidim for they follow the Rebbe’s ZT”L adamant opposition to relinquishing any portions of Eretz Yisrael. While Shas was under the leadership of Eli Yishai, a more hawkish politician, there was a considerable number of Chabadnikim that voted for Shas but with Deri’s return, this is highly unlikely.

Not willing to accept the loss of the Chabad votes, Deri sought a meeting with HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Ashkenazi Shlita, mora d’asra of Kfar Chabad and Av Beis Din Chabad in Eretz Yisrael.

That meeting took place in Kfar Chabad close to 23:00 on Monday night, the eve of 21 Cheshvan 5773, lasting for about 20 minutes during which Deri reportedly explained historical facts to the rav, quoted as saying he was opposed to the Oslo Agreement.

Ladaat quotes Deri as adding “I did not come here to ask for your support, but I wished to be heard, to state the truth and present the facts.

The rabbonim present did not indicate if they will support Shas or not.

  1. Mr Deri is well knwn as a very truthful honest person.

The Courts have taken note of his moral behavior.

As the saying goes “He can not be bought only rented”

    Let us all beware

  2. To be very clear the Hacham did not support the Oslo accords, rather instructed his followers to obstain.

The question is how much did shas get paid for sell out eretz yisroel.

Perhaps the Rt Hon Rabbi Deri can tell us

  3. Can anyone explain why a Chabadnik would vote for Shas?

What is the Rebbe’s view on the spiritual and political leadership?

Is there anything honest about the Gang of Shas?

  4. “Deri reportedly explained historical facts to the rav, quoted as saying he was opposed to the Oslo Agreement.”

The historical facts are quite clear. Shas joined the Meretz-Labor coalition and voted in favor of Oslo 1 and Oslo 2. Shas was headed at that time by Aryeh Deri and was guided by Chacham Ovadia. One can not change facts.

Deri would do better by truthfully explaining why Shas believes/d that a peace agreement with the Palestinians is essential for the future of Israel and stop pandering to right wing voters.
