The ministers from Likud, Bayit Yehudi and Yesh Atid voted to prevent the Peri Share the Burden Committee from extending the IDF service of hesder bnei yeshiva to two years despite efforts to the contrary by ministers from Yisrael Beitenu and The Movement parties.
Yesh Atid voted in line with Bayit Yehudi, only extending hesder military service by one month in line with an IDF request, as they agreed in the coalition agreements. Supporters of Bayit Yehudi leader Minister Naftali Bennett point out that his alignment with Yesh Atid is what saved hesder students in this case.
The Hesder Association on Sunday night the eve of 18 Sivan 5773 attacked The Movement party for comparing hesder to the chareidim. In its statement, the yeshiva association stated “there is no room for comparison since hesder students serve 60 months, of which 16 are active service. During the remaining time, hesder talmidim remain ‘on-call’ and are the first called up for duty in the time of need, in an emergency such as wartime or operations to protect and/or serve the homefront. Hesder has merited earning the Israel Prize and has proven itself over 40 years of service.”
