“This is the moment that you felt ‘Atem nitzavim hayom lifnei Hashem Elokeichem.’” The Lakewood Mashgiach, HaRav Matisyahu Salomon shlit”a – then Mashgiach in Gateshead Yeshiva – marveled at the power of the moment that was the 10th Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi, which took place in Elul of 5757 (September 1997).
The 10th Siyum was the first Siyum in history that filled two massive arenas in the same region – Madison Square Garden and Nassau Coliseum – in addition to satellite locations around the globe. Gedolei Yisroel filled their respective daises. They felt the poignancy of the moment and what it means for the future of Torah, and The Daf in particular.
Addressing the masses, Rabbi Yissocher Frand shlit”a, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva Ner Yisroel of Baltimore, urged, “Savor this moment. Cherish this moment. Remember this moment!”
And, just as the gedolim envisioned, Klal Yisroel very much felt the “moment.” In what would be less than one year before his passing, Rabbi Moshe Sherer zt”l, the legendary Chairman of the Agudah, exclaimed, “As a result of this inspiration, tens of thousands of new lomdei daf yomi will be created.”
Indeed, over the past twenty-two years, the ranks of learners of The Daf have nearly doubled worldwide – in large part thanks to the potent “moments” of each Siyum HaShas. As a result, over 350,000 yidden worldwide, bli ayin hora, will iy”H celebrate the upcoming Siyum – and make it the largest and grandest Torah event in contemporary history.
No doubt, Klal Yisroel can look forward to the most powerful Siyum moments yet…
