Israel: Inspectors Nab Treif Meat

1A truck marked “mehadrin meats” elicited the suspicion of kashrus inspectors, prompting them to stop the truck for inspection. The inspectors found poultry that was ‘schechted’ in the tradition of Karaites, people who feel they are Jews but reject the Oral Law entirely. They accept paternal lineage to determine one’s Jewishness as well. They live in areas including Ramle, Ashdod and Beersheva.

The poultry in the truck was marked “kosher mehadrin, under the hashgacha of the chief rabbi of Lod”. They were on their way to deliver their goods to kosher butcher shops. According to the label affixed to the meat, it was slaughtered but not soaked/salted/soaked.

Ironically, the inspectors do not have authority to confiscate the load. They photographed the evidence and distributed it with an alert to a WhatsApp group in the southern area of the country.

The head of Lod’s Kashrus unit in the local rabbinate intervened and B”H he prevented the delivery of the poultry to area stores.

In another case, 700km (1,540 lbs) of tainted meat was apprehended by inspectors in Akko as it was making its way to butcher shops in the northern area. Authorities explain the meat was unfit for human consumption. They add the driver is a resident of one of the Israeli Arab communities in that area. The meat was confiscated and destroyed.
