FBI Director: Better Hate Crime Tracking Needed

fbiFBI Director James Comey says state and local law enforcement need to do a better job of tracking and reporting hate crimes.

Comey said at an Anti-Defamation League summit on Monday that some jurisdictions fail to report hate crimes, while others say that none occurred. He says that would be “welcome if true.”

He said better tracking of hate crimes is needed to “fully understand what is happening in our communities and how to stop it.”

The FBI publishes hate crime reports based on the data they receive from law enforcement agencies.

The FBI director was addressing the group just weeks after an avowed white supremacist was accused in Kansas of killing three people outside a Jewish Community Center and a nearby Jewish retirement complex.
