Speaking to hundreds of listeners, Maran HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita addressed the exorbitant sums spent on ostentatious chasenahs today. He warns such events may lead to an ayin hora.
The event was held in the Orchos Torah Kollel in Bnei Brak marking the completion of Meseches Beitzah and Megillah. The gadol hador took part in the event along with other area rabbonim and of course the roshei yeshiva and avreichim.
The rav focused on the amounts of money spent on chasenahs, speaking out harshly against the practice. “There are many avreichim without children. You must understand that those who make such large chasenahs and buy fancy apartments lead to an ayin hora and leads to not having children”.
The rav spoke of Rochel Imeinu who was barren, quoting the pasuk
“וירא ה’ כי שנואה לאה ויפתח רחמה ורחל עקרה”.
Rav Shteinman explained because of the ‘tzoros ayin’ and jealousy Rochel did not have children.

This is hardly “news”. It isn’t like the gedolim used to call for spending one’s life savings (and savings from past and future gilgulim) on a wedding.
“News” would be if anyone listened to the gedolim on this matter.
This needs to be applied both to the outrageously expensive chasunas avreichim make as well as the enormous and costly weddings Rabbonim make “dynasty” weddings. These can also cause “ayin hara” for the choson & kallah with thousands of people staring at them.
A wedding is and should be about the “couple” and the “marriage” they are entering in to and not about showing off to friends and family. The point of the “nice” wedding is to be mesameach chasson v’kallah who rarely have any say at all about what is going on at the wedding.
It is a insult to the gedolim when they are continuously quoted in bits and pieces. Nearly 100 percent of the time, if one were to hear or read the entire speech, the message being delivered would be far different. The YWN should ask forgiveness each and every time they quote a sentence here or there. The message is distorted and often times misleading in these small silly quotes. I do not understand what Rav shteif man said based on this little article. I have no clue what he is referring to and no other reader of YWN understands either what Rav shteinman was intending.
