Religious Councils Next on Yesh Atid’s Agenda

lapidYesh Atid MK Dr. Aliza Lavie feels too few women are on the nation’s local religious councils and those who are fall far short of fair representation of the women in the country. Lavie, who chairs the Knesset Committee for the Advancement of Woman is sponsoring a bill to compel fair female representation on religious councils. At present explains Lavie; women represent 5% of the religious councils, 1 in 20 members of the councils.

She adds that women are only serving in a third of the nation’s religious councils and not a single woman serves as the head of a religious council.

Rackman Center for the Advancement of the Status of Woman Prof. Ruth Halperin-Kaddari adds that reality is such that in many places, women haven’t a chance of entering the council. The Rackman Center is partnering with MK Lavie to formulate the bill which is moving ahead to compel fair female representation on the nation’s religious councils.
