The Invisible Bullet – Article About Measles Outbreak And Vaccinations

meas[By Rabbi Hershy Z. Ten – President of Bikur Cholim Los Angeles, CA]

Imagine a 6 y.o. child walking into a classroom waving a loaded gun amidst his classmates while his pregnant teacher acts as if nothing is wrong. Now imagine a week later 4 more gun-toting children come to school with no objection from any school personnel. While this scenario is inconceivable, in fact this deadly game of Russian Roulette is happening in our own communities at an alarming rat e. Over the past several weeks the deadly disease of measles has returned. From Disneyland in Orange County to Santa Monica, the number of potentially life-threatening cases is growing every day. The cause is simple, not enough children are being vaccinated which is placing us all at risk.

Every day, there are anti-vaxxer parents sending their children into schools, playgroups, synagogues, and public gatherings as unwitting biological weapons; creating breeding grounds for contagious diseases long thought to be eradicated in America thanks to the success of vaccinations.

Some Los Angeles Jewish day schools have reported that in recent years (2013 – 2014) as many as 21% of their kindergarten students are not immunized due to the Personal Beliefs Exemption. These children sit and play with your children; their parents take them to pizza shops, celebrations, everywhere. A small number of adults who were vaccinated as children may not be safe either, as there is some evidence that potency and effectiveness of childhood measles vaccinations may eventually wear off in some people. And since there is no way of identifying measles cases in the earliest stages of their infectiousness, everyone is a potential victim in the line of fire.

The efficacy of MMR vaccines relies on “herd immunity”; meaning that 95% of the population must be immunized to ensure that an infected person cannot spread disease. This is especially vital to the 1% of the population who experience adverse physical reactions to vaccines thus cannot be vaccinated. And when the herd immunity is compromised, the most contagious diseases are the first to return. We’ve seen the return of pertussis (whooping cough), mumps, and now measles. To put this danger into perspective, measles carries the distinction of being the world’s most contagious disease. Just one infected child in a crowd can spread measles to every other person present who hasn’t been vaccinated, leading to hospitalization and possible death.

Babies are routinely scheduled to get their first measles shot at 12 to 15 months of age which means that within the first year of their lives, they are defenseless against anyone walking around spreading this life-threatening disease. In fact, measles is so widespread in California that public health officials have advised parents to keep all babies under immunization age away from crowds, international travelers, and airports.

For those below the poverty-line, affordability was thought to be the obstacle to immunization; however since vaccinations are available through all public health systems, this resistance isn’t stemming from a lack of funds. Over the past decade there has been a significant uptick of well-educated and economically stable households opting not to immunize their children citing personal and religious beliefs as their mantra. Unfortunately the choice not to vaccinate is most often based on false data that incites fear among parents. Much is due to people clinging to erroneous studies published such as the now discredited and fraudulent 1998 research paper authored by Andrew J. Wakefield, MD falsely claiming links between the MMR vaccine and autism and bowel disease; all of which was uniformly discredited by the worldwide medical community and recanted by the author himself. Exacerbating the problem are irresponsible laypeople, especially celebrities, who publicly decry vaccinations with absolutely zero medical credentials or supporting research.

For anyone suffering from measles it is a potential killer. For the pregnant woman, measles places their unborn child at risk of premature delivery and death.

While school administrators are aware of which students are not vaccinated, their teachers are not. So what is a pregnant teacher to do? Should a policy be put in place to have unvaccinated childre n removed from school? What is the anti-vaxxer parent’s responsibility, must they disclose that their children pose a risk to others? While many pediatricians are now refusing to continue caring for patients who are unvaccinated, equal measures need to be implemented by our schools and synagogues against this potential epidemic. Just little more than 25 years ago, America was hit by a major measles outbreak which infected 55,000 people and killed 120, with half of said deaths occurring in California.

A fundamental tenet of the Torah is to lead a healthy lifestyle and not put oneself or a fellow human-being at risk. The observant community has always looked to its rabbinical and educational leaders for guidance and there are substantial halachic sources supporting immunization that should be championed and set forth to help protect our children and society. There is no shortage of sermons from the pulpit expressing opinions on regional or global politics or lobbying congregants to join on missions to our nation’s Capital. Policies are established by educators to shelter students from inappropriate media and etiquette that may compromise our values and iron gates and guards employed to protect our synagogues and schools. With the very real threat that measles poses, we must call on our leadership to allay the unsubstantiated fear of vaccinations and thwart this deadly anti-vaxxer trend.

  1. What do you say when the say in the name of Rav Shmuel Kaminetzky, not to take vaccines. He even said that regarding the polio vaccine.
They say similar things Bshem Rav Chaim Kanievsky.
P.S.I’m only saying “they say” because I never heard it directly although it appears to be well known opinions of theirs.

  2. I think that popular and successful private schools should not accept unvaccinated children. Shidduchim with such families should be avoided. Eventually, they may come around, get ill, or at least be segregated as they deserve. We have choices too.

  3. Reply to Comment # 1 :

If it’s true that these Gedolim said not to immunize, then we need to consider the likelihood that by now they will have changed their opinions.

We see that certain Gedolim were initially “Mattir” smoking (B’di’eved) but as new data and info became known, they then changed their opinions.

With the latest data and info regarding the situation and safety of inoculations, I would assume that the Gedolim you mentioned would now “Pasken” that it’s important to be immunized.

Perhaps you should write to Reb Chaim Shlit’a and simply ask him.

  4. So, if you and your kid is vaccinated, what’s the problem?
Oh wait, the vaccine is 97% effective.
The vaccine is a live vaccine, which can actually transmit the virus.
The vaccine contains many harmful ingredients, like mercury. They don’t even sell mercury thermometers any more.
I have no idea what the percent is, but 120 deaths out of 55,000 is a very low number. A lot less than 1%. Let’s get some perspective on this.
Pregnant woman who are not vaccinating are at risk, as are people who can’t get the vaccine because they are allergic to eggs, and those with immune comprised systems (like my son was after his bone marrow transplant).

  5. 120 deaths out of 55,000 is a fifth of one percent. It looks like this … 0.02%

The freaking out is just plain a uncalled for.

  6. LI Yid,
    What do I say?
    1. Get your children away from mine.
    2. What will YOU say when children die because others were not vaccinated?

Wake up and think for yourself, please.

  7. Oh please, measles in not a loaded gun. It’s by and large a nuisance, and the immunity acquired from having had the disease is far stronger that that Of the vaccine.
More children die each year in car accidents R”L, than ever died of measles. When I was a child, all my siblings, my friends and myself suffered through the measles, and we all survived to tell the tale. I know more children who Nebach died of cancer and even heart disease, than of illnesses like measles, mumps, chicken pox etc.
There may be good reasons to vaccinate, but the hysteria on the pro-vaccine side is just as ridiculous as that on the other side.

  8. Get it right!!! Measles is NOT deadly…Yes, it’s contagious and a nuisance, but not deadly. It can however be harmful to pregnant unvaxxed woman.
I can’t wait for the day (Which will come sooner than later) studies will prove the MMR helps cause autism. I will make lots of $$$ of the gov then.

  9. Just a couple of questions here:

Why would any person, private or public, have an incentive to come out vocally against vaccinations. Neither for fame nor for the money? So maybe it’s a good idea to check into what they’re saying. The medical world makes billions of dollars on vaccinations. This is NOT A SECRET.

Why is it that when measles goes around it is caught by vaccinated kids? They are protected, aren’t they? On the same note, it is interesting to see, if you follow closely, the largest percentage of people catching disease are vaccinated! (That’s what happened in Brooklyn)Maybe it’s ‘broadcasting’ their compromised immune system??

Perhaps NONE of the people yelling against the ‘anti vaccine league’ did proper research, or any research at all? Perhaps if they’d let their guards down, and sincerely, honestly wanna know the truth, they’d find it.

There’s way too much proof that vaccines compromise our immune systems and that disease resurgence may have many other triggers.

Do your homework. You may change your mind very soon!

  10. Long Island yid. Since you ask dad Torah about medical issues maybe I should ask my doctor questions on Torah. Time to tell these old men getting there information from there inner circles who no nothing
Every rav I’ve spoken to you has said to take it. Including das Torah that also have medical degrees

  11. All the drug companies have to do is provide ONE – JUST ONE – long term study that compares 1000 kids that are vaccinated against those that are not vaccinated and we will be game. I’m not talking about less than a week but rather something more scientific. Surely with the billions of dollars they make every year they can afford such a study not to mention the billions the federal govt. pays for vaccine damage. It’s funny how this writer lumps everything together with Wakefield and autism. Wake up and do a little research. Check out how most of the FDA are ex-drug company CEOs ! These are the people you are trusting with your health. Even Dr. Shanik who is the leading pro-vaccine Doc in Lakewood said to a patient he doesn’t know too much about safety but he relies on Dr. Fenster who relies on Dr. Offit’s book. And yes, Dr. Offit has a patent on rotovirus vaccine….It’s all about money ! I strongly suggest that all readers DO THEIR OWN RESEARCH WITH AN OPEN MIND !!!
