Israel: The Stab-Proof Vest that Failed the Test

sta[VIDEO IN EXTENDED ARTICLE]

This Channel 1 News report involved correspondent Eitam Lachvor, who was simply trying to do an interest piece for the nightly TV news. He was going to wear one of the protective garments provided by the company and have them test it against knife attacks while wearing it.

The company has been providing protective garments to the IDF, Israel Police and Defense Ministry for years. It designs clothing that offers protection against guns and knives. Often the Prime Minister of Defense Minister will wear a jacket or coat that has this lining, enabling the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) to protect them without having them appear awkward in a public setting.

Lachvor wears what appears to be a regular down vest after the panels to protect him from a knife attack have been inserted. However, it appears piece that is supposed to keep the panel in place was not there and after the first two stabbing attempts the protective layer shifted and the third stab penetrated Lachvor’s back. He required a number of sutures and is taking painkillers but B”H he was not seriously injured in what is an embarrassing test for the company.

  1. Reminder to everyone not to try stupid stunts like this.
Also important to remind everyone that soft ballistic body armor(level IIa,II and IIIa), or what the velt call “bulletproof vests”, are not intended to protect against edged weapons.
