30-Mile Backups Reported On Garden State Parkway

4:30PM EST: Officials reported massive backup on the southbound side of the Garden State Parkway today, as holiday motorists trying seize on the warm weather made their way down to the Jersey shore.

Early in the day today, the second day of the Memorial Day three-day weekend, backups stretched for as long as 30 miles in sections starting at Exit 117 for Sandy Hook, said Jim Zaccherio supervisor of operations at the state Traffic Operations Center in Woodbridge. But Zaccherio said traffic began to thin out as the afternoon progressed.

“Earlier it went for 30 miles in pockets,” Zaccherio said.

Start-and-stop backups of up to 15 miles persisted into late afternoon, particularly in the area from Exit 117 down to Exit 102 for Asbury Park, he said.

There were also exiting delays for Exit 97 at Point Pleasant.
