People living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and several neighborhoods in Brooklyn are urged by Con Edison to reduce their use of electricity.

The utility company says it is experiencing problems with electrical cables in the areas.

In Manhattan, the affected area is bounded by 111th Street to the north, Central Park West on the east, 71st Street on the south and the Hudson River on the west.

In Brooklyn, the affected neighborhoods include Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Windsor Terrace and Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Con Ed customers shoud avoid using non-essential appliances such as washers, dryers, air conditioners and other energy-intensive equipment. You should also turn off lights and televisions when not in use.

The utility says crews are working to fix the cable problems.

If you experience any service difficulties, contact Con Ed at 1-800-75-CONED or visit ConEd.com.
