BREAKING NEWS ALERT: PRESIDENT MUBARAK STEPS DOWN

11:05AM EST: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has resigned – After 18 days of protests across Egypt, Mubarak has resigned moments ago. The announcement was made by Vice President Omar Suleiman, and says Mubarak has handed power to the military. Crowds in Cairo’s Tahrir Square broke out in cheers as the announcement was made on Egyptian State television.

Earlier on Friday, massive crowds outraged by his refusal to step down packed squares in Egypt’s two biggest cities Cairo and Alexandria.  They marched on Mubarak’s presidential palaces and blockaded state television in a move against symbols of his authoritarian regime.

Various media outlets reported that Mubarak had taken his family and fled Cairo, possibly to Sharm el-Sheikh.

TEXT OF SPEECH:

In the name of God the merciful, the compassionate, citizens, during these very difficult circumstances Egypt is going through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down from the office of president of the republic and has charged the high council of the armed forces to administer the affairs of the country. May God help everybody.

  1. This is just the beginning of earthshaking events. The situation is inherently unstable, and Obama is stirring-up this devil’s brew.

“Hevey Mispallel Bishloma Shel Malchus…–an unstable government unleashes the dogs of hell.

  2. John Doe:
What would be the purpose of a million people showing up to Washington?
Is there a dictator running the country?
Are there not annual elections and a presidential election election in 2012?

  3. Mark,

I’m unclear which march that didn’t have 2 million people you’re referring to, but as best as I can tell, the largest estimate for the crowds at an anti-Obama rally are 1.6 million, which Michelle Bachmann claimed without any backup support for the Restoring Honor rally this year, and which was three times the estimate of the event organizer. In all likelihood no rally has been anywhere near a million people.

  4. Maybe hashem gave us such incompetent leaders like Obama and Bush who have no understanding of the Mid East to force us to focus on Hashem. Since we cannot rely on Obama who had a bi-polar approach during the whole Egypt crisis we should realize we must only rely on Hashem.
