Rockland County Hit With Flash Flooding; Roads Closed, Buildings Swamped


Heavy rains, with as much as two inches per hour, are predicted for this afternoon and some local roads are flooding out.

Westchester and Rockland counties are hardesst hit. Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoff declared a state of emergency at 1 p.m. due to the rainfall and severe flooding.

The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office said all residents and businesses in the area of New Hempstead Road and Main Street in New City to avoid during in the area of that intersection, which is flooded. The department advises people who must drive to use alternate routes.

The Thruway in the Spring Valley area also has roadway flooding.

In Monsey, the entrance at a large kosher supermarket — Rockland Kosher — at Route 306 and Route 59 was reported under water.
