IDF Responds To High Court On Kol Isha

In the case of Yoel Glickman, one of the cadets ousted from the IDF’s Officers’ Training School for walking out during a performance by a female vocalist, the IDF maintains the solider is compelled to obey orders.

In its response to an appeal by the soldier to the High Court of Justice, the military maintains the orders given to compel soldiers to attend the event were not illegal and as such, soldiers are compelled to obey direct orders.

Nine cadets were ousted from the program and it was decided that those willing to apologize for their actions may return. Some did, but Yoel and others refused, explaining he was taught Halacha prohibits them from attending such a performance and as such, he and his colleagues were compelled to walk out. He simply will not apologize for adhering to Halacha, despite the heavy price being paid.

  1. Given that the business of an army is not music appreciation, the fact that they make listening to a woman singing a precondition to being in the army suggests that contrary to their whining, they neither need nor want hareidi soldiers (and the people kicked out weren’t even hareidi, just frum zionists). If the army had a need for orthodox soldiers, they would strive to accomodate them. While the army can’t arrange to have the Arabs refrain from attacking us on Shabbos or during Hol ha-Moed, the army can arrange for things like pritzus IF IT REALLY WANTED TO. The hilonim complaints about frum people not serving in the army are pure (to sort of use a phrase YWN won’t allow) manure of male bovines.

  2. Dear peacemaker: if you believe that the army is full of prietzus and you hold that reb a.l. stienman has the same shitus as other Rabbonim then why does he let send to the army and encourge it.

  3. Why doesn’t ayone praise the dedication of Yoel Glickman? He is sacrificing his career for Jewish Law and making a true Kiddush Hashem – regardless of the I.D.F.’s laxity vis-a-vis tznius. Kol HaKavod to him. May we all display such fortitude in our avodah!

you wrote ; “the people kicked out weren’t even hareidi, just frum zionists”.
Do you stand by this statement?
I was about to agree with you until i saw this.
Thess soldiers who had the cajones to stand up to a NISYON, and yet you dismiss them out of hand as not Haredi?
It puts a reyusa in everything else you say.

  5. YOEL, what a zechus to add to your bucket before Yom Hadin.

How many people would have given up on a career, a lifetime dream, etc….to be mekadesh shem shamayim. (especially when there are legitimate hatarim to have remained in seat)

  6. #1 and #2 what does this have anything to do with zionism? Until you can answer that you have no right to comment on these posts

Great comment. I agree with you may we all have his strength to do what’s right and stand up for Torah regardless of the consequences.

  8. This definitely deserves a shout out to Reb Yoel.
Keep it up. AIN OID MILVADOI!!!

We are not stupid. we know exactly what the zahal has in mind.
They do a world of good when it comes to the military part. And I must admit that I’m proud of them for that.
But they should not shove their pritzosdiker shitos down everybodies throats.
    Kol hakovod to Reb Yoel.

  9. I think this entire [kol isha] incident is extremely sad at best, but we mustn’t lose sight of the good. In the past two plus decades, the army has been integrated, and today, the national religious are a majority in many combat units, the most elite units. Years ago, no one would have ever seen soldiers walk out of a kol isha event, but now, it’s major news. There are frum soldiers in every branch of the IDF today, including the air force and navy. This was unheard of years ago!

Yes, there remains much to be done, and much to correct, but as the enemies of Am Yisrael are working to create a terrorist state in the UN, next week we may find ourselves davening for these soldiers and officers, so we should not be so quick with the condemnations. There are our boys at the end of the day, for good and for bad.

I for one am proud of the IDF, with all its shortcomings, but it remains the only army of the Jewish People that will do the ‘derech ha’teva’ fighting while others are sitting and learning. I actually see one complimenting the other.

We should not condemn, but continue and increase davening that the dati leumi soldiers of today move up the ranks faster and that Nachal Chareidi grows as it has in the past.

Today, there are already officers of the rank of colonel from the first Mechina program, Bnei David in Eli. That means in a few more years, those who dismiss soldiers from officers training for walking out of a kol isha event will be retired, and the members of the General Staff will be Shomer Shabbos officers.

It takes time, and it is far from perfect, but it’s all we have.

  10. ENOUGH of the rechilus! All of you haters, hating other Jews…. wasn’t the bais hamikdash destroyed because of sinaas chinam? Do you really think they hated each other for no reason? It was because they thought they weren’t good enough Jews! YWN shame on you for consisently posting articles that instigate comments such as these (which by the way seem to have a running thread of hating non-chareidi Jews). Commenters, your “more righteous than thou” approach just shows that your version of Judaism isn’t necessarily what God wants.
