On Sunday, 12 Shevat, a cornerstone laying ceremony was held for the new police neighborhood in Jerusalem – N’vei Barak neighborhood.

In May 2012, Government Decision No. 4655 was adopted, on the occasion of Jerusalem Day, to instruct the Israel Lands Administration to allocate land in the tender for security forces in the city of Jerusalem, towards the construction of residential neighborhoods for members of Israel Police and the IDF. On the basis of this decision, 13,000 square meters was dedicated in the Ramot neighborhood of Jerusalem. The reasons for the allocation of land to policemen in Jerusalem stemmed from the fact that 45% of the Jerusalem District Police do not live in Jerusalem due to the need for significant operational manpower at any given time and availability during times of emergency and, most importantly, to increase the sense of personal security of the city’s residents and visitors.

On Sunday, the cornerstone dedication took place in the presence of Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Police Chief Yoni Alshich and other senior officials.

The new police neighborhood, that will be called N’vei Barak (Bet Resh Kuf ב.ר.ק.) stands for Security (Bet – ביטחון), for good of police (Resh – רווחת השוטרים) and Community (Kuf – קהל).

Six high-rise buildings will be built in the project, three six-story buildings and three 9-story buildings. The project will include 108 residential apartments for policemen serving in the city of Jerusalem and their families, and the construction of the project began last year, after the completion of the planning stage.
