HaRav Shlomo Amar: Bein Hazmanim Tragedies Resulting from Bitul Torah

Jerusalem Sephardic Chief Rabbi HaRav Shlomo Moshe Amar responded to the growing number of tragedies impacting the chareidi tzibur during this bein hazmanim R”L.

The rav warns that the tragedies are occurring as a result of the bitul Torah that accompanies bein hazmanim.

“As a rule, during these days, ‘bein hazmanim’, unfortunately, there are many tragedies because there is a great deal of bitul Torah. This is not a simple matter. There is so much bitul Torah. This is most serious and as if the bitul Torah was not enough, it leads to many aveiros” Rav Amar stated.

The rav calls on bnei Torah, “So much care should be taken when one heads out, even if the intentions are good – in order for a person to rest and relax, and one must take great care all the time, all the more so during bein hazmanim”.

  1. A 1-year-old boy drowned in a pail of water in his home in the Zichron Yaakov However I doubt he was already in Yeshiva and hence on Bein haZemanim right now, so Bein haZemanim would have no bearing on his horrifying tragedy.

  2. sure they sit and learn Torah for full days for months on end and then they have 3 weeks to enjoy the outdoors which they are not familiar with. Too bad their yeshivas do not train them by giving them advice on safety….

  3. I have a lot of respect for Rav Amar so I don’t want to come off as contradicting him, but besides bittul Torah I feel like so much danger in the charedi tzibur is just due to utter lack of common sense. Look at all the injuries due to water – where was the parental supervision? You can’t just leave small children unattended by bodies of water!

The biking accidents – were the kids biking near busy streets? Did anyone ever teach them not to? Were they wearing helmets? I wasn’t at any of these incidents so I can’t personally say, but judging from how I see the kids ride their bikes in certain neighborhoods I can wager a guess.

It’s a very important mitzvah to maintain personal safety – is this being taught in charedi schools at all? Are parents instilling this in their children? Children are the most special gift from Hashem one could ever get – you can’t mafkir them!!!

  4. With all due respect to Rabbi Amar, who died and made you a Navi? Lately its become an epidemic with certain Rabboni, who feel the need to weigh in and tell us exactly why the Ribbono Shel Olam does what He does. Pure idiocy,
