After serving almost two years in prison, former Member of Knesset Basel Ghattas was released. He was convicted of smuggling cell phones to imprisoned terrorists.

Ghattas was released from prison on Monday morning, after almost two years in prison. he entered prison in July 2017. He served as a MK in the Balad party.

He was arrested in December 2016 after he was caught smuggling cell phones into prison which he gave to imprisoned terrorists in Ketziot Prison. In addition to the prison term, he was fined NIS 120,000.

In November 2018, Ghattas requested that one-third be removed from his prison term for good behavior, as is customary. Since he never expressed remorse for his actions, and due to the serious nature of his crime, the parole board accepted the opinion of the prosecution and his request for early release was denied.
