Israeli Court Rules: No Flights To Uman For Rosh Hashanah During The Night

The Lod District Court has ordered the cancelation of a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) decision to permit an exemption to the regulation banning flights from Ben-Gurion International Airport between the hours of 1:40AM to 5:00AM.

The CAA permitted the exemption due to the pre-Rosh Hashanah traffic from Israel to Uman, those wishing to be at the tziyun of Rav Nachman of Breslov. However, this year, the municipalities of Holon and Rishon L’Tzion, located in proximity of the airport, sought relief from the court on the grounds that the night flights interrupt and disrupt the rights of 500,000 residents with noise pollution.

In the petition, they argued that the cause was commerce and that the airlines were getting rich at the public’s expense. Following the hearing, the court ruled that the CAA director had exceeded his authority when permitting a curfew violation which was not in accordance with the criteria set by the Minister of Transportation’s decision.

  1. Don’t flights at JFK operate 24/7?

I used to go to yeshiva in far Rockaway. There would be planes all the time.
I just got used to it. I don’t get what the big deal is….

  2. This is strange! I am planning a trip to Eretz Yisrael this month, and my flight home is scheduled to depart Ben Gurion airport at 4:50 am.
Should I assume that this curfew isn’t followed all the time? Or should I question my travel agent’s competence?

  3. BEn7863 its because the flights were all the time you got used to them. but if its only for a few weeks, a person will not get used to that

  4. To takahmamash from the times of the Bal Shem Tov Chasidim have gone to their rebbees for Rosh Hashana. It’s not only Breslov. If it’s not your minhag stay home but don’t give your unwanted advice

  5. @ah yid: They aren’t going to their Rebbe for Roshh Hashana, they’re going to his grave! The whole thing of abandoning their families to visit a grave or retarded. These days it’s due to good marketing and idol worship of a dead body. If they cared about ruchnios, they would stay in Eretz Yisroel for RH rather than visit a country with so much Jewish blood in the ground.

  6. ah yid, rebbes still alive is understandable; dead rebbes not so much in this religion. otoh, many depend on this influx for their parnassah; guess who??
