Charedim Demand That Chametz Law Be Passed Prior To Elections

The High Court of Justice ruled on Sunday that people could be permitted to bring Chametz into hospitals during Pesach. The ruling enraged the Charedi parties in the Knesset who verbally chastised the judges and called upon the government to change the law and vote in an overriding clause.

Bchadrei Charedim news site reported that the Charedi parties are putting together a blitz of proposed laws in order to get them passed prior to the upcoming elections. Among these proposed laws will be a change in the basic law that will allow an override clause to be implemented thus preventing chametz from being brought in to hospitals.

Head of the UTJ faction Moshe Gafni is spearheading the venture.

In order to call the plenum to order, Gafni would need the signatures of more than 25 percent of the MKs. In order to do so, the Charedim will need to bring in the Yamina party as well as members of the Likud.

Gafni chastised the judges in a public statement and said: “These insolent judges are abusing the period of time between two Knesset’s, when the legislative branch cannot raise ammendments or overriding clauses with regard to this issue. They are not considering the sensitivities of Jews who keep kosher who will need hospital services during Pesach.”

Head of the Shas party, Interior Minister Aryeh Deri said that as soon as the elections are over the Shas party will work towards bringing forth a proposed bill that will maintain the status quo and allow the heads of each individual hospital to make the decision, thus allowing smaller hospitals that serve a minority to cater to that minority. “A small hospital catering to a minority cannot be thought of in the same light in this regard as one of the hospitals serving the majority of citizens in the country.”
