Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who sports a long track record of incendiary anti-Israel rhetoric, is now throwing her weight—and donor list—behind Zohran Mamdani’s quixotic campaign for New York City mayor.
In a fundraising text blast reported by the New York Post, Tlaib rallied support for the New Yorkers for Lower Costs super PAC, a group aligned with Mamdani, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist currently serving in the New York State Assembly. Both Tlaib and Mamdani are vocal advocates of the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement—a campaign widely condemned as antisemitic by mainstream Jewish organizations.
Mamdani, who has roots in Indian and Ugandan heritage, has made headlines in recent months for his inflammatory attacks on Israel. In October, he declared: “I will always be clear in my language and based in facts: Israel is committing a genocide,” and has accused Israel of “massacring babies” in Gaza—echoing some of the most grotesque and unfounded propaganda pushed by Hamas supporters.
Tlaib’s support for Mamdani underscores the growing alliance between anti-Israel progressives and fringe political candidates looking to capitalize on identity politics and far-left activism. In her fundraising pitch, Tlaib slammed Democratic front-runner Andrew Cuomo, outrageously claiming that he is on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “legal team,” allegedly defending “war crimes in Gaza.”
The Mamdani campaign has already maxed out its public fundraising cap through New York’s generous 8-to-1 matching funds system, qualifying with a stream of small donations. Meanwhile, the super PAC backing Mamdani has raised a modest $60,000—chump change compared to the $4 million-plus hauled in by the Fix The City PAC supporting Cuomo’s campaign.
Critics are sounding the alarm.
“Congresswoman Tlaib is renowned for her hatred of Jews, promoting vile blood libels against the Jewish people and standing up for terrorists who kill Jews,” said Kalman Yeger, a New York City Councilman representing Brooklyn. “It should shock no one which mayoral candidate she chose to support.”
Mamdani, for his part, has not disavowed Tlaib’s support or walked back any of his extreme positions.
The Democratic primary is set for June 24—and with it, a test of how far New York Democrats are willing to go in tolerating candidates who traffic in divisive, anti-Israel rhetoric wrapped in the language of “social justice.”
