In a leaked recording aired by Channel 12 on Thursday, former IDF intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva — who resigned in the wake of Hamas’s October 7 massacre — can be heard sharply criticizing the Shin Bet for failing to anticipate and prevent the devastating cross-border attack.
“Where were you, Shin Bet, with all of your billions [of shekels in funding] that you receive?” Haliva demands in the recording, blasting Israel’s domestic security agency for not alerting top defense officials in time.
Haliva recounted how then-defense minister Yoav Gallant had fumed over not being woken up the night before the onslaught.
“The one who needed to send an agent to wake [him] up at night was the Shin Bet,” Haliva said.
Yet Haliva admitted that even had he been alerted, he would have followed the prevailing — and disastrously wrong — assessment among senior officers that Hamas was deterred and not planning a large-scale assault. Those now claiming otherwise, he added, are “liars.”
The former intelligence chief went further, lamenting what he described as the collapse of Israel’s governing and security institutions.
“Many processes have broken down every good [institution] here. Because there is no police force. Because there is no rule of law. Even in the army, many things related to basic discipline — it’s all falling apart,” Haliva said.
Haliva announced his resignation in April 2024, becoming the first senior defense official to step down over failures leading up to October 7. In his resignation letter to then-IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, he acknowledged his “heavy responsibility” for the military’s unpreparedness on what he called “that black day.”

“assessment among senior officers that Hamas was deterred …” what kind of reason is that to play with human lives and refrain from protecting the borders when the signs were obvious?! MURDERERS!! SENT THEM TO PRISON INSTEAD OF THE BOCHRIM!
As the Chazon Ish noted decades ago, one day we will all wake up to discover that the Zionist “State” simply no longer exists (and he was obviously referring to the “government”, not the Jews there).
blamestorming. this has no value unless it includes at least one actionable suggestion for improvement, which this does not.
Weird how you left out the bit where he said “For everything that happened on October 7, for every person on October 7, 50 Palestinians need to die. It does not matter now if they are children.”
It seems preventing the Oct. 7 massacre of the past is the only issue that matters to you, not the one happening now, at your own hands. Perhaps you can then see why the entire world has grown disgusted with your vulgar tribalism, victimhood fantasising and heartlessness. And when I say ‘your’ it’s a reference to the writers, editors, readers, voter of these monsters and anyone else supporting this atrocity. Your shame will never be forgotten.
