Sorella, who runs a Chabad center in Sydney and is a friend of the family of Rabbi Eli Schlanger, H’yd, described the dilemma she faced following the massacre at Bondi Beach on Sunday to Sherri Markson of Sky News.
She said that her traumatized children insisted that they turn off the menorah, frightened that their home will be targeted, chalilah.
In a heartbreaking video, she described what happened next:

There is no halachic issue with having the menorah inside the house, and not being visible from the street. People who live in skyscrapers often do it that way (since otherwise no one would see the menorah), not to mention Jews who are persecuted and have to be afraid (though in the 21st century, and will knowledge how things went in the 20th century, why would Jews want to stay in a country where they are persecuted).
This is about an electric Menorah, Chabad style. Listen to the video again.
ובזמן הסכנה מניחו על שולחנו ודיו.
All this talk of “We will not let them win. We will be stronger and more public than ever” is misguided and against Halacha. In times of danger you retreat and hide.
It is time to turn off the menorah of exile and turn on the Menorah in the Beis HaMikdash, and if there is no Beis HaMikdash, to stand proud in Eretz Yisrael and end the exile, before the exile ends you. Jewish pride starts first with living in the land that HKBH gave to us……and we can stop the next tragedy by all ascending to yerushalayim instead of being among the non Jews. We must stop the tragedies with unity, and unity can only be achieved in one place, Eretz Yisrael. So it is time to come home, from all over the world, the message is clear, it is time to come home.
ShayaGetzel:
It is very much against halacha (and needlessly risky) but, unfortunately, these Jews were not taught actual Torah hashkafa/halacha that you noted.
peretzt1:
In the Jewish faith, Jewish pride is only for following Torah and mitzvos, not living in the land from which HKBH expelled us to bring back the holy sparks throughout galus. Unity can similarly be achieved in only one way: total adherence to the Torah. The message is indeed very clear: time to discard the Zionist idol and all other idols and be loyal to only G-d and His Torah.
