During a special visit this week to the southern city of Netivot, Sephardic Chief Rabbi, Hagaon HaRav David Yosef, delivered an emotional and powerful message to students and young learners, outlining the true path to becoming a Gadol Hador.
Addressing the students, the Rishon L’Tzion emphasized that greatness in Torah does not come through special Brachos alone, but through daily effort and consistent dedication to learning.
To illustrate the point, he shared a story he heard from his father, Maran Hagaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L:
A young student once approached Maran and asked for a blessing to become a Torah scholar. Maran responded simply:
“What do you want from me? Learn! It depends on you.”
The Rishon L’Tzion explained that this foundational principle — personal responsibility, diligence, and a sincere desire to grow — is what has built the world of Torah scholarship throughout the generations.
According to Rabbi David Yosef, when a child is given proper guidance, a supportive framework, and confidence in his own potential, he can truly reach greatness.
Turning directly to the students, he declared:
“Each one of you can become great in Torah. It begins with a decision — to learn, to persevere, and not to give up on yourselves.”

Having a father who was a renowned Posek also helps. Did he mention that, or is he just talking from personal experience?
@ipcha
Your a buffoon and a moron.
In what frame of mind would it be relevant how HE was successful?
He was pointing out that ANYONE can be if they put in the effort.
So where exactly was the part where he should have mentioned having a father that is a renowned posek?
This doesnt have to do SPECIFICALLY with HIS personal experience.
