The Sunday post represents a significant escalation in both tone and specificity from Trump’s previous warnings. On Saturday, the president had issued a 48-hour ultimatum threatening unspecified severe consequences if Iran did not restore free passage through the Strait. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of the world’s seaborne oil supply passes, has been effectively closed to normal commercial traffic since the conflict began in late February. Traffic through the waterway has fallen approximately 90%, according to CNBC.
