UPDATED – Har HaBayis Closed Sunday Morning Following Arab Rioting


tmo11.jpg8:55AM IL: (UPDATES BELOW) Police on Sunday morning ordered Har HaBayis closed following Arab rioting which included rock-throwing. At least 12 people were arrested. Arab sources report at least 8 injured.

Police were targeted with rocks and firebombs. Arabs also spilled oil on the ground to cause responding forces to slip and fall.

After moving in with stun grenades, police brought the situation under control while tefillos continued at the Kosel below. The Mount was closed and a heavy police presence remains in the area as a helicopter monitors the situation from overhead.

Police were present in large numbers on Sunday morning following calls before shabbos from Islamic officials to come and “protect” the Temple Mount from Israel.

UPDATE 1:39PM IL: Violence against police continued on Har HaBayis on Sunday morning and early afternoon. A number of police were injured, lightly it appears. The Mount remained closed and Arab MK Dr. Ahmed Tibi was prevented from visiting the area by police, fearing he would reignite the situation. At least three people taking part in the violence were taken into custody.

Israel Islamic Association northern branch official Abu Ali Sheikha was among those arrested in the morning violence.

Following the first wave of morning violence, police established checkpoints in the Nachal I’ron (Wadi Ara) area, to prevent Israeli Arabs from the north from making their way to Yerushalayim to take part in the violence.

  1. By the rules of war Israel has sovernty over the Temple Mount. What right to the vanqueshed have to riot against this. Israel must come with a strong hand. All rioters should be shot they are forigners. No Muslim should be permitted on the Har Habyis.
