Clan Fighting Leads to Gunfire in Ras el-Amud (Maale Zeitim)

It began on erev shabbos when two policemen were lightly, injured by rocks in the escalating violence in the Ras el-Amud (Maale Zeitim) area of the capital. Rival Arab clans were feuding, which escalated on Sunday from rock and bottle throwing to gunfire, leaving at least 3-5 injuries critically.

Magen David Adom officials report transporting three critical victims of gunfire to Hadassah Mt. Scopus and Ein Kerem Hospitals. The Red Crescent was also operating in the area, transporting a number of people, presumably less seriously injured.

MDA medics waited in a safe area until given the green line to advance to treat the wounded.

A store on Sultan Suleiman Street in the eastern capital was set ablaze on Sunday afternoon, the same street where the Jerusalem District Court is located. Police indicated that preliminary reports indicated the store is owned by one of the members of the clans involved in the feud.

A large police force was dispatched on Sunday in an effort to bring the violence to an end. There were no reports of arrests.

  1. To bring the violence to an end? Why on earth? Let them fight it out and let both sides have lots of hatzloche. Why endanger jewish lives of police officers and mda medics to end their internal feuds?
