PM Olmert Calls Lebanon War a Success

olmert c cover.jpgAccording to the AP, PM Olmert declared Thursday during a tour of Israel’s northern border that the war he launched against Hezbollah guerrillas a year ago was a “success” that made Israel safer. “We had in this war great achievements,” Olmert said near a road that was hit by one of the nearly 4,000 rockets that Hezbollah fired into Israel last summer.

Olmert has repeatedly called the war a success, noting the heavy damage inflicted on Hezbollah and the presence of a massive U.N. peacekeeping force policing Lebanon’s southern border. However, Israelis remain unconvinced.

Israel’s wartime military chief and defense minister have already lost their jobs in the wake of heavy public criticism, and the final conclusions of the Winograd Report, expected in the coming weeks, could put pressure on Olmert to resign.

(Perhaps Olmert’s resignation will be the only success of the second Lebanon war.)

  1. He is totally blinded by power, as most people in power are.

He is desperately trying to establish a legacy, as his career comes to an end. Most politicians engage in this exercise in their waning years, and tend to become foolish in the attempt (witness Shimon Peres, Jimmy Carter, etc.).

  2. sure it was a double success – one for hezbollah and one for helping getting rid of another ehud (Barak)from leading Israel down to the knees of the Arabs

  3. Poor Olmert, everyone is telling him he lost the war and no one to claim he won, so he himself has to do it. Yehallelcha zor velo picha.

  4. previous comment left too fast.

Yehallelcha zor – velo, picha. Let others tell you praise – if not, praise yourself.
