Snow is coming down at a staggering rate of 2 inches per hour at the National Weather Service office in Upton on Long Island.

That kind of snowfall rate can quickly overwhelm roads and create near-whiteout conditions.

Forecasters say additional heavy snow is expected overnight and into the morning hours as the powerful storm continues to hammer the region.
