South Carolina’s effort to pass a new congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterms failed in the state Senate Tuesday after several Republicans joined Democrats in opposing the proposal.
The vote blocked a map that would have eliminated the state’s only majority-Black congressional district and potentially helped Republicans gain another House seat ahead of November.
South Carolina Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey called the effort “short-sighted,” saying Republicans are stronger when Democrats remain “vibrant and viable.”
