Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new U.S. sanctions on Cuba’s state-owned energy company, CUPET, accusing the Cuban government of using the country’s energy sector to maintain political control and benefit regime elites.

Rubio said the sanctions are part of the Trump administration’s efforts to increase pressure on Cuba’s communist government and support greater economic and political freedom for the Cuban people.
