Since 1971 over 20 studies have linked talcum powder to cancer. The lawsuit claims that one of the largest producers of talcum-based powders (Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower), Johnson & Johnson (“J&J” or “the Company”), knew about the cancer risks, but failed to warn consumers of the dangers.

Reuters reported that J&J’s raw talc and talcum powder tested positive for asbestos several times between 1971 and 2003. The article continued to state that numerous internal company memos, reports and other documentation that were revealed during the lawsuits suggested that J&J knew of the danger. Since then, J&J has denied the allegations and said it was all an “absurd conspiracy theory.”

On October 18, 2019, J&J issued a voluntary recall some of its Baby Powder after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration test found trace levels of chrysotile asbestos contamination.

Recently in one trial, a Missouri jury awarded $4.69 billion to 22 women who contracted ovarian cancer after using Johnson’s Baby Powder.

In another trial, a New Jersey jury awarded $787 million to four women suffering with mesothelioma after using J&J’s baby powder.

Finally, on May 19, 2020 J&J announced that that it would stop selling its Baby Powder in the United States and Canada, mentioning weakened sales since the roughly 16,000 lawsuits, claiming it has caused cancer.
