Chacham Ovadia Remains Awake Due to the ‘Harsh Gezeira’

For those wondering how Gedolei Yisrael Shlita regard the “harsh gezeira”, referring to the planned induction into the IDF of thousands of Bnei Torah, it is reported that Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita does not sleep due to his concern over the new reality.

Rav Ovadia is quoted as telling a number of rabbonim who visited with him lately “I don’t sleep because of the induction gezeira”, with the Gadol Hador warning of the consequences of pulling bnei Torah out of the beis medrash to serve in the military.

The rav is quoted as saying “The Torah world is in danger” due to the planned induction of the bnei Torah, adding “we are surrounded by those who hate our, by enemies, those who hate the Torah. This doesn’t bother them. They just want to implement harsh bad gezeiros. We are in a very bad situation, major tzoros” the Gadol Hador is quoted as saying.

“The Torah is in danger. What of the talmidei chachamim if they are inducted? Rabosai, we are in big trouble, major danger. Have pity on your sons. Have pity on your children’s children that they should study Torah”.

The rav adds it is “intolerable” that talmidim will be inducted and busy themselves with army duties instead of limud Torah. “They are taking away HK”BH’s nachas ruach by removing the bnei Torah from their limud. We are in big trouble” the rav added.

  1. Two questions:
    a) Why is alright for bohurim to give up learning to participate in preparing for the elections but not to give up learning to sacrifice themselves potentially for their medinah?
    b) Why is the blood of people in yeshivas more precious than that of other Jews who are not in yeshivas? Since when is it alright for them to risk death in the Zionist army but not people in yeshivas? Where does this exist in the Torah?

  2. Two answers:
    a) It’s not alright for bohurim to give up their learning to prepare for the election but there is no choice, and it’s waisting some time to get much more, if they stay out of the army they will gain an extra three years by waisting two weeks.
    b) No one said their blood is worth more, but the blood of the soldiers is not worth anything without the learning boys.
It is time to realize that the Israeli army is not what is saving us from the enemy, we saw with the war in Gaza or Lebanon, the mossad’s failures, the stupidity of the politicians, and the only reason we are still there is because of God’s miracle, and it’s not by sending learning boys to the army that you will help that!
    Start thinking!

  3. Please look up t’hilim perek 127

אם ה לא ישמר עיר שוא שקד שומר

It is not the army only hashem is the that gives us security. So by removing the lomdei torah you are removing the security.

  4. #2 “The reason”…. I’m trying to understand your quote “but the blood of the soldiers is not worth anything without the learning boys”…. How disappointing to hear that from you. American soldiers who fight for us in the US do not learn Torah, let alone Jewish, but to me their blood is worth something.

  5. #5 — Your answer is to the question as to whether the Israeli government should subsidize yeshiva bochrim? It is irrelevant to non-zionist bochrim (who “mooch” off of tsadakh from individual supports of Torah learning, primarily from the diaspora). More importantly, the current debate is whether 18 year old Jewish men should be allowed to learn Torah full time or be required to work full time for the military – financing Torah studies is not the topic of the debate.

  6. To Nicejew.

    a) As Rav Steinman said if you don’t vote and help getting vote it’s considered as לא תעמוד על דם רעך.
But I would think it’s common sense.
    b) It says in the Shulchan Aruch that Rabbis don’t have to pay for the guards of their town, meaning they don’t have to participate in the security of their town, because they are the real security.

And please forgive my english, I forgave your ignorance!

  7. To “Jewishflorida” I didn’t mean that their blood is not worth anything, most of my family is in the Army, I meant that their protection doesn’t come from the bullet proof vests they have but by the learning, and without the Torah world, their blood is not worth anything, meaning the risk is much much bigger.
