EXCLUSIVE BREAKING NEWS: Masores Bais Yaakov Closed Due To Flu

ywbn2.gifFIRST REPORT: Mesores Bais Yaakov in Flatbush is now the 3rd Yeshiva to be closed due to the recent flu outbreak, YWN has confirmed.

In a phone conversation with Rabbi Yosef Gelman (School Dean), we have been asked to publicize that the entire school will be closed until the Monday after Shavuos.

Rabbi Gelman stressed that although there are currently no documented cases of Swine Flu in the school, a decision to close the school was made after consulting with a few local pediatricians.

Mesores Bais Yaakov is located on Ocean Avenue & Avenue I in Flatbush, brooklyn.

This school closing follows Magen David Yeshiva & Yeshiva Tiferes Yisroel – both of which have confirmed cases.

Please be advised that YWN is aware of a few additional Yeshivos which may be closing due to the Swine Flu outbreak as well. As soon as we have confirmed information, it will be posted.

  1. DivreiChizuk. Lichvod/Dear Klal Yisrael,

  2. Anyone know why when 1 public school closes it is all over the news but now that it has hit the local Mosdos we are not hearing anything about it (unless it is on the news and I missed it)?

Is this a NYC health department closure or are our local schools acting on their own? If this is not a city forced closing then keep in mind every school is mandated to be open a certain number of days to get some state funding. Will this now mean that the schools will have to open an extra week at the end of June?

  3. #3 – while I understand the emotional feeling of your statement, I am not sure I agree that keeping children home and not learning with their Rabbeim and Moros is the “safe” thing. Learning Torah is the safest thing to do!

  4. #6- thank you. We can learn Torah in our Mikdashei Me’at if necessary, and we cannot allow this virus to stop us from learning Torah! At the same time, we have to look out for the physical wellbeing of everyone who comes into contact with us.

  5. #7 – agreed. Are these schools that are closing down doing what the Public Schools did by hiring cleaning companies to clean and disinfect the entire building before they reopen?

Also, where will these kids be when not in school? In their homes not wanting to be in contact with anyone because we are afraid? Or will they be with the same friends they would have been with in school just now in a different place?

we must be careful but so far one school is closing without even a confirmed case, One school has 1 case and another school also with 1 case. The important thing here is to be a mentch. If your child is not feeling well keep them home. Don’t put others at risk. But if everyone is feeling fine then why are we keeping them home for a week?

If the schools are doing their part and professionally scrubbing down their buildings then I understand the need to keep everyone home. If not then it is unfair to all of us with kids in these schools.

  6. #5- in the beginning the news announced every school that closed down but now r”l alot of schools are closing so its not that “major”.
also it just came on the news-wait ontil tomorrow to see if its in the newspapes!!

  7. 26 estates- you seam to have a lot to say on the subject.I have two questions for you and every other poster- have you even considered how the parents of the confirmed child feel. Not knowing were this ends, and second “who is the Das Torah that decided to close school?” THEY ARE THE SAME PEOPLE YOU TRUSTED WITH YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION.No one is saying bais medresh bochurim should go on vaction- Fakert- they should be showing their dedication buy learning in their shuls. Nothing in Klal Yisroel gets done by people who think they have all the answers, just do your part and stop posting stupidity.

  8. What I don’t understand is that EVERY year flu goes around and EVERY year some people who have other medical conditions die, nebach. That is what is happening this year. When the news reports that someone died, they always seem to say that the person had other medical conditions. We never close schools like we are here. Could it be that the goverment want to take our minds off of other things?

  9. #12 – not closing. Just asked that any girl in their school with a sibling in one of the schools that closed should not come to school.
