Thursday, July 20th, 2006TJN: Members of East Ramapo’s public school community took the podium last night to criticize the Board of Education’s recent decision to appoint a new district treasurer and to pay him for what had been an unpaid post. Earlier this month, the board voted 5-2 to appoint Israel Bier of Monsey — a longtime opponent of East Ramapo tax increases and a former school board member — as treasurer, replacing James Rose, the district’s business administrator who had for years also performed the treasurer’s duties. Thursday, July 20th, 2006CJN: A halachic-based humanitarian and educational organization has begun slaughtering kosher chickens for the Cuban community on an ongoing basis. “Even though in the past we had periodic chicken slaughtering… [From now on] every few weeks we’ll have another few slaughterers go down,” said Rabbi Simon Aisenbach, executive director of the Canadian Friends of Cuban Jewry (CFCJ). Thursday, July 20th, 2006ROL: The Raleigh, one of the last of the famed Catskills hotels, has been sold to a Hasidic group for $5.1 million. The plan is to turn the former landmark, the haunt of Sammy Davis Jr. and Totie Fields, into a religious day camp. Rahal LLC, a corporation formed by the Congregation Khal Bnei Zion Inc, purchased the 320-room hotel and 90 acres on July 18, county records show. The Congregation is affiliated with the Brooklyn-based Bobov sect that own a religious camp across the road. (more…)

George Pataki and other prominent politicians visited Kiryas Joel yesterday to pay respects to Mayor Abraham Wieder, whose son, Boruch, died of brain cancer on Saturday at age 36. Boruch Wieder was the eldest of the mayor’s 10 children. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor four years ago.? Visiting him yesterday were Pataki; state Senate Democratic Leader David Paterson, who’s running for lieutenant governor; and Westchester County District Attorney Jeanine Pirro, Republican candidate for state attorney general.
